My ds is 9 weeks, he has colic/reflux has gavison off the doctor which as helped but gives him constipation. He's on SMA hungry milk, he wants food every 4 hours!

Hes awake 10 hours of the day and does not sleep no more than 4 hours max at a time, even tried rusk in his bottle(i know you shouldnt but he does not sleep) I give him a routine at night and in the morning.

He was on aptamil, i switched over to SMA which helps with his wind this also gives him constipation!!

Has anyone tries the reflux milk for aptamil/SMA. Hes doesn't bring up the milk at all maybe once in every 3 days!

xmaseve, have you had a chance to discuss the whole thing with your HV or your GP? Getting gaviscon dosage right does not always happen first time, and you are right that it can cause constipation.

Feeding every four hours is not very often (not sure if your ! indicates you think it is). Most babies of this age will not sleep for more than 4 hours max at a time, day or night.

Rusk in the bottle is risky - your HV will confirm this. It is actually dangerous, and could make your baby very ill indeed. The strain on a 2 mth old's kidneys and digestion is too great - and that's only one of the risks.

Sounds to me that it would be useful to get a fresh overview of meds and milk from your HV/doc...at the moment it seems a bit of trial and error, and a bit of support from the HCPs should help.

Hes on 2 doeses of gavison it helps but makes him extremely consitpated and he wakes up screaming due to the pains and tensing trying for a poo.

He dont sleep at all, im at my wits end. Ive tried all different milks for him, i know the rusk is risky but it does settle him a lot more(i make it into a milky paste).

Ive asked the HV and Dr, when he got his jabs i asked for something else for his reflux she said gavison is the only thing and brushed me off. I give him boiled water/prune juice and med for his constipation.

Hes been awake since 8am and has just gone to sleep he will sleep for 3/4hours and wake back up for another 3/4 hours, im exhausted to say the least!

I am going to try the Aptamil reflux/SMA reflux i dont know which one is the best?

You need another opinion - there are other meds for reflux. Maybe find another HV who can offer better support? Or ask the HV about the milk choices?

I'm going to say it again - please don't give your baby rusk in the bottle. It is dangerous.

yes, no rusk! his waking is really normal. he is so so young. normal. I eat or drink often less than every four hours! wind well- it may take a long time and be more than one bur[. there are various positions you can try. and for reflux hold upright after feeds for 20-30mins or put in a sling or upright bouncer if you can't hold him straight up.

I'm using the SMA Staydown milk for Reflux. I would talk to your GP before you switch. We tried lots of other things before we changed milk.

The SMA Reflux milk is risky. It cannot be made with water above 70 degrees so you risk your LO's health every time you feed. We are waiting for a paediatrician to see us where I want to discuss changing milk again as I aware I am putting DDs health at risk using this formula.

Have you propped the cot at an angle? Are you using a sling? Are you keeping LO upright for 30 min after feeding? I find distraction works well. Try to get out as much as possible and distract your LO from the pain.

It's bloody hard though.

He isnt sick as much he just screams during the day/night! He woke up 4 times in night and im like a zombie!

Im not putting the rusk in the milk anymore now, its only giving him an extra hour sleep. Which is heaven when you dont have any sleep!

I am going to the GP today to ask for another med for his reflux.

His moses basket is lifted up and i sit him up during feeds and dont let him lay dont, even have a pillow for his head during nappy feeds and when he lays on his back during playtime.

He isnt bad as he was but in the day he screams and screams, walk wont settle him either, im a single parent which is even tougher!

Ask for Ranitidine.

xmasevebundle · 19/02/2013 19:28

Went to the GP, said a HV will come out and watch him during feed. He just screams, ive stopped giving him gavison he hasnt done a poo in 3 days i told the DR this, i think its the gavison.

If he has got reflux(which he has) he needs to see if its medical problem, if not he will put him on the aptmail reflux.

Its also devolped eczma due to stress, i hope it gets sorted. I have PND which the Dr and HV nos about but as im young (20) they think i dont know anything :(

Video a feed on your phone. I found that very helpful to show HCPs.

geekette · 19/02/2013 20:03

please don't take this the wrong way but do try to calm down too. it is really normal to be in a zombie state with a newborn.
your baby is so tiny still.
most of these things eventually pass with time too and you can't just get a magic pill to get more sleep. ime, even if you solve the reflux issue baby would have moved on to some other sleep eroding developmental stage.

as well as getting health advice or a new prescription, can you meet other mums with similar aged babies? you might be surprised how much you have in common.

and really, no more rusk in the milk as tiktok advised...

narmada · 19/02/2013 21:17

Eczema and reflux..... I am thinking milk allergy. There are prescription milks that are prob worth a try. You will need something called an extensively hydrolysed formula- it has the milk proteins broken down. The issue is likely NOT lactose intolerance but milk protein intolerance.

xmasevebundle · 20/02/2013 16:07

Im going to start a mums group next tuesday, i dont even go out, unless i have to get nappies or milk. When he wakes up, all hell breaks lose.

My mum said it could be the milk, not keen on aptamil nor hipp, he likes SMA but its giving him constipation.

The HV is coming tomorrow at 2pm to watch him for a few hours during a feed etc. I hope she is prepared for the screaming fits! :(

Hope the HV helps, xmaseve....sounds like life is very difficult. Great idea to go to a mums group, so you can find some friendly support.
