Vitamin drops-where to get them?

I read on another thread that vitamin drops should be given to bf babies from 6 months. Id not been told this but DD isn't quite 6 months yet. Where should I get these? Do they need to be prescribed?

Pharmacies sell them

I breastfed DD until she was three

Never gave her vit drops

Is this quite new guidance?

I was given vitamin drops by the health visitor and told that I just have to show a card at the local sure start centre to get more when they run out. I was told to give them to DS from one month old (EBF). Maybe ask at your local healthy child clinic?

Thank you for the replies. We attended BF clinics at Surestart centres, reguarly seen HV and had Dr checks etc and it's never been mentioned which I find odd. Perhaps diff advice for diff areas? We don't live in a big city etc. Will mention at next HV meeting and see what she says (she doesn't fill me with confidence though tbh after recommending CC when DD was 3 months ish!!!) if not pharmacist will be next port of call.

Thanks again

My HV said to give them from 6mths - like you I didn't trust her to be the voice of wisdom. I did some research and eventually decided to give vit D only (this was about 9mths, once I'd decided). I felt he was getting enough from food and bm for the other vits. He has Dlux400, once every other day (this is actually the dose recommended from 1-5yrs, but I decided that as a chunky, dark-skinned child in winter, the risks of giving none exceeded the risks of giving the dose recommended for a child 3mths older - ymmv).

Afaik LLL and kellymom recommend only vitamins/minerals you think might be deficient - for me this was vit D.

I think I saw that thread. I had a look on nhs direct and their guidance is that all bf babies over 6 months (and up to 5years) should have vit d drops. If they are ff it probably has it added so no need for supplements, until they start weaning. If the mother didn't take vit d during pregnancy then they may recommend drops from 1 month.

I also couldn't find any. It seemed only multi vitamins were available for an extortionate price

Oh and the nhs page was last updated in April 2011, so it seems to be a case of info/training being out of date Hmm

Thanks. I got some vitamin drops today. I tried to give her them but most was dribbled out again!
