Been bFing since day one with no probs. DD now 10 months and over the past couple of days both my nipples but more the left which is the side she favours have become red and so has part of the aureola (sp?) there is a defined straight line between the affected part and the unnaffected part which corresponds to where she latches.

She is a snacker but prefers to feed at night (I often fall asleep with her feeding and wake up and she's still attached). We are addressing that with gentle sleep training, getting her out of my bed and into a cot for at least the first part of the night - I guess the night feeding could be relevant?

My nipples are not terribly painful - just sore and a bit itchy. They look dry, especially around the edge of the affected area. I can feed without wincing but it's not very nice. They also feel hot when I am not feeding.

Her latch is fairly shallow (I can see aureola around the edge of her mouth when she is feeding) but as it's never been an issue before I haven't bothered trying to adjust it. She has grown pretty much along her centile.

sounds like it could be thrush re red and flaky itchy and uncomfortable. have you looked on the laleche league website for info? has baby got any white patches in her mouth?
if you suspect thrush pop and see gp for some treatment and look up some homeopathic remedies which are also very good. x

Trush is usually agonising throughout the feed. So may not be that. Could just be soreness due to a poor latch?
