I have a sore boob, not the nipple, deeper in if that makes sense. I am breasfeeding a 10 month old. Any ideas before I dash to docs for embarassing examination?

blocked duct?

PurseyHandbag · 21/04/2006 12:35

get in shower, lots of soap, and massage whole boob very gently and see if it dissapates. if not,see doc.

I have had this deeper sensation and it was mastitis. As it re-occurred I had several acupuncture session with good results - no further mastitis.

It may be your weaker side? If that is the case try to not feed so long on that side. Although if you have soreness you will need to get rid of the mastitis first.

I have never taken antibotics. Used homeopathics also which was good but the acupunture was free!

Charmkin,it could be thrush.
Deep brerast pain is one of the symptoms.
You may need fluconazole to rid yuor body of it.
From my (terrible) experiences, topicalk creams did little good.

Charmkin,
If your doc is anything like mine, it won't help going to see it....
Mine was willing to gime an antibiotic just because I sad I was sore, and thought I had a mastitis... When I asked him, if he was sure I needed, since didn't want to expose baby to antibiotics unecessary; he said - well, I'll have to look at it... Shock
Anyhoo, he examined as looking for how fresh a dead fish was, and said unconvicingly the Ab might help. Angry
Well, I had a blocked duct, which DH spotted! Once I unblocked pain went away in a few days. I, of course didn't take Ab.

Sorry for the rant! But I would suggest for you to wait and see how it develops.... If it is mastitis you will know! and even if it is, kellymom suggests waiting 24 h because most will sort it out by itself!

Try paracetomol to reduce the pain!
All the best!

could it possibly be mastitis?

if it is you will feel like sh*t (fluey, breast pretty sore).

I've had it twice in the past month, am bf 9 mo dd, and she has bitten me hard enough to cause bleeding both times, hence bacteria entered.

Had thrush when feeding ds ages ago, difference for me was with mastitis the breast hurts, as can the armpit (lymph nodes), with thrush its more generalised and kind of itches, or there is deep stabbing pain.

I'd honestly get it checked, and undergo the embarassing examination. (you could request a female doctor). Mastitis can lead to breast abcesses if not sorted and that means, I think, surgery.

beccles, I had persistant thrush with ds 2 years ago and actually did also with dd more recently, now I think about it (mummy brain). I did the daktarin ciruit for ages with ds. Then I gave up and resigned myself to pain. The thrush disapeared by iteself about a month later. I did basic stuff like scrupulous hygeine (use pads and change as often as possible, new bra every day at least, etc). Go topless and let the neighbours have their fun, also, it does help.

Alternatively, with dd when I realised we were both getting thrush again, I did some research and found out that oral antibiotics are quite effective, so I made my gp prescribe those rather than faffing around with creams. Cleared up in about 3 days. I had to be quite insistant though as they do not like prescribing oral antibiotics (but will prescribe those daktarin gels to smear in their mouths for months on end!)
