Three questions re. expressing

  1. If I express during the same day into one bottle (which I intend to label 'Monday'), is it ok to add to the bottle in the fridge directly or do I need to cool down the new expressed amount before adding it?
  1. If we warm a bottle and DD only eats half of it, is it ok to put it back in the fridge for the next day, or not?
  1. Our fridge is 2 degrees. Should I expect milk expressed on Monday to be fine still to eat on Friday?

Thanks!

In my experience (so may be wrong but happy to stand corrected!)...

  1. I express into a new bottle but then add it into the one in the fridge when I'm done expressing - it means the chilled milk isn't warming up then cooling down again etc.
  1. Don't think so - better to warm smaller amount then add to it, but I think once you've heated the milk up it can't be re-used
  1. I've been told you can kkeep it for 24 hours in the fridge - otherwise would suggest freezing it in small batches

Re (3) the breastfeeding network have milk storage guidance here.

Re (2) there is some information on reusing EBM here although like PP suggests, you could offer smaller amounts initially, and then more if necessary.

  1. You should cool the 2nd batch before adding it.
  2. You can offer the rest of the same bottle up to 3-4 hrs later but then discard (so better to offer smaller amount first)
  3. Should be fine.

Hopefully this should help www.kellymom.com/store/freehandouts/milkstorage01.pdf
