its all gone wrong...

I have been breast feeding 24 week old ds, all was going well and he was sleeping through the night.

He got croup at the end of Nov and it really disturbed his sleep pattern. He recovered after a week or two but we can't get back on track.

He doesn't want to feed much during the day but wants an all you can eat bedtime buffet instead.

If I try to offer feeds unrequested during the day he just smiles at me and chews my nipple.

Sounds like he is reverse cycling since being unwell. DS went through a phase of this. I managed to get it back on track by slowly spacing out night feeds. I figured if he could do 3-4 hours in the day, he could do it at night.

i would shh him when he woke at night or just cuddle him for while until it had been 2.5hr, then 3 etc. It wasn't long before he was back on track.

Thanks seriously sleep deprived, I am going to make an effort tonight to actually wake up properly tonight and be aware of the time, feed him and put him into his own bed instead of just having him in with us and giving him all access nipple.

Well last night was like feeding a newborn.

I gave a bottle of expressed milk at 6.45, 7oz. He slept untill 11, then was up 3.30, 5, 7 and up awake at 9am.

Every time he opens his mouth today I an going to pop a nipple in, see if we can beat this.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Both mine were still feeding every two hours at night at 6m.

I would have kept him up at 7am to try and get daytime sleep back on track so he is ready for sleeping more at night and feeding less.

Did you give him a really good feed at 11pm?

zuleika did they have a spell of sleeping through previously? That's what has thrown me, he was soooo good at it until now.

Thoughts I was so tired it didn't even cross my mind to keep him up, he was sleeping so I did too. I fed him as much as he would take at 11.

Oh well, this too shall pass, he's happy, healthy and growing.

No - DS up to that point had been waking on wildly differing schedules from day one (sometimes every 40 minutes, so every 2 hours was fantastic). Their sleep patterns change on a regular basis - it's important not to think that it's something you've done or something that needs fixing.

This happened to DD2. She was very poorly at six months, and that completely threw her sleeping. She was sleeping through from about 4 months. After she was ill, she had a fair few 'newborn' nights, and I felt like it was never going to end. The bad news is, 3 months later she is still waking at night. The good news is that it is only once a night, and she is resettling straight away after a bottle. It is frustrating, so I sympathise. Weird how illness can throw them off a previous pattern for so long.

My DD was only waking once a night at 5 months and I was looking forward to the 'sleeping through once they are on solids' that I had heard about. [gullibleface]

At 6 months she went back to 5-6 times a night like a newborn. By 9 months I was desperate, A friend said her ds hadn't slept through until she stopped bfing at night, so I tried shush-pat to settle her instead. She has slept through since! I still can't believe it worked so well, and she now eat like a little piggy during the day. I wish I'd tried it earlier.

Of course now I have smugly posted about how well its going she will be awake 20 times tonight.

Thanks for all the posts, I have him in with me to make it as easy as possible.

I think I will go with the flow and see how we get on, maybe have a go at wish patting but its probably easier just to feed him.
