DD (pfb, ebf) is now 6 weeks old and I decided to try expressing for the first time this morning. It went pretty well; using a hand pump I got almost 2oz in about 10/15 mins (wasn't really timing myself) and stopped as I felt that was enough for the first time. I'm pleased that it worked. DH and I decided to try giving DD the expressed milk straight away to see how it went so he tried her with it (in a TT closer to nature bottle) whilst I showered. She only took a bit but I had fed her before as I had read that trying when she's not too hungry would be better. We then tried again before the next feed and she took the rest no problems!

Anyway, I am wondering how much and how often I need to express. I want enough milk to be able to leave DD with DH for a couple of hours whilst I get my hair cut or similar, perhaps enough for DH to do night feeds one night per week so I can catch up on sleep. How much would I need for this? Should I be 'draining' one/both breasts when I express or taking a set amount? I worry that if I took too much there wouldn't be enough left for DD at that feed.

Sorry for rambling, any advice/experiences/tips would be very welcome.

I used to leave DH with about 5oz if I was going out for two or three hours, and would feed DD or DS before I went. That was usually enough to tide him over. But we did bottles on a regular basis - every day or two - just to keep up the habit (if babies get out of the habit, sometimes they'll refuse a bottle altogether) so I used to express 3-4 oz most mornings and freeze anything that wasn't needed immediately.

Thanks, I think we will keep giving a bottle a couple of times a week, though this might be more difficult when DH is at work.

Kellymom website usually recommends 1oz per hour for an ebf baby. Certainly worked for my 2 so I leave 3-4 oz if I am going out for 3-4 hrs. Have realised Dd2 has a smaller feed late morning than mid afternoon (she's 6 months and in a loose routine these days) so I know she'll drink 3oz if I leave her for someone else to feed around 11 am but probably 5-6 oz for 3-4pm or bedtime. At 6 weeks she would never have drunk more than 3oz at one feed
