Calcium supplements while breastfeeding ??

Hi all,

I'm EBF my 12 wo DS and recently the doctor asked me to start taking calcium supplements saying that if I don't then me and my DS could have calcium deficiency :(

I am currently in India on my maternity leave and it seems to be the norm for breastfeeding mothers to take calcium supplements. I am not so keen on supplements as I believe in getting all nutrients through a good healthy diet...

Just wondering if anyone was recommended this by the HV or GP ??

Cheers,
Jo.

I've been recommended to take a multivitamin with calcium in it - but that's because I'm egg and dairy free as a result of breastfeeding an allergic 15 month old.

However, the dietician and GP both stressed it was MY calcium that was the issue - that DD would get/take all the calcium she needed through my milk - and that if I wasn't getting enough it would be my levels that would be low.

Also, they were fairly happy that had I been following a regular diet (i.e. not excluding dairy) then there would have been no need.

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks vvviola !!
I have 3 glasses of milk and a cup of yogurt on a daily basis.... surely that much diary should be enough :)

I should think so! I was certainly having less than that before I had to cut it out and no-one made much of a fuss (and that's 2 bf babies over 3 countries).
