Dd has had bottles of EBM and formula several times a week since she was around 10 weeks. She is now 5.5 months and starts nursery on Tuesday.... Since a major vomiting session last weekend I have been only bfing in order to flush her system but now she is refusing all bottles! Am feeling quite desperate as I'm going back to work next weekand she will be left at nursery. She has been left before and took a bottle from her carer no problem. Please give me some positive stories!

I breastfed DD until she was 4.5 months then went slowly onto formula milk, she wasn't very impress about it(only drinking from the same milk bottle).. but started nursery at 6 months old then refused her bottle of milk during the day! We didn't push her, and offered her water in a cup instead while weaning her. She was and still is drinking no more than 60ml of milk in the morning, but have milk with porridge then 210ml of milk at 18h30 and 210ml of milk at 22h00. (DD is now 9 months old, drinks lots of water during the day and eats well) so we realised that food was more important for her than drinking milk. Good luck on going back to work lovemygirl...

She may be refusing the bottle from you because she can 'smell' or sense your breast milk, and would much prefer that instead!

Or teething?

Or coming down with cold?

I'd be very interested to see what advice other Mners can give. My 24 week old ds has suddenly decided he doesn't like the bottle either. I've been trying to give him one bottle of ebm a day since he was about 14 weeks and although he only ever took 5 ozs max he now only takes an ounce or so and then just chews on the teat. Total disaster as I want to begin to drop the breastfeeding and also to start weaning.

My baby refused the bottle on 2 occasions.

He was breastfed but from week 3 had 1 bottle of expressed or formula milk, and we never had any problems with the bottle. Until....

When he was 5 months old and still being breastfed he suddenly started only having 2 oz of milk and then screaming when the teat went near him. At this time my breast milk started to dry up, only enough to give him 2 feeds per day. We then had to switch to formula. For 2 weeks he kept refusing the bottle and would only take 2 ozs at most. Ended up spooning milk and water down him to stop him getting dehydrated (there was a heat wave at the time - typical). One morning I found out the reason this was all happening - we both had chickenpox! When he recovered he drank from the bottle fine. Unfortunately never got to b/f again as I was so ill my milk dried up completely within a few weeks. I didn't know until this time that if they are rejecting milk they might be ill.

The other occasion was his 1st day at nursery. He refused all bottles. I think it was just because no one except me or my husband had ever fed him. He was OK the next day at nursery though.
