baby sick after every feed

Hi everyone.

My baby is 3 weeks old and I have exclusively breastfed since day one but for the past few days he has been vomiting after every feed. Is this normal? It just looks likes small quantities of milk and he still has plenty of dirty and wet nappies although he doesn't have as many poos as he did a week ago.

Very normal. As you say, only a problem if nappies stop bring wet. If that is the case, see the GP as there are various (uncommon but not rare) problems. Get used to smelling like baby sick! Oh, and your entire house.

He got some on my mouth earlier!

Impressive and disgusting in equal measures!

While nappy output is important, it's not unusual for breast fed babies to store up a poo. No one told me this and I panicked when she didn't poo for 24 hours. She was still producing enough wet nappies and all other signs was vital.

Then she pooed....

Good god.

Now I learn to have a full change ready to giving she's storing again ;) also she's more windy and sicky on those days. We do tummy massage to help.

My first child was very ever sick, and I just assumed this was the norm for breastfed babies.

Fastforward 2 years later when DC2 was born and she was sick all the time! I freaked out, took some friends and the HV to explain that it was normal. She's 17 weeks old now and it has settled, she's maybe only sick once a week now.

phew!

Argh, meant that to say that "my first child was never ever sick..."

Some babies are just happy sickers - it's completely normal, and not a medical problem, just a laundry one!

Mine still throws up at 8 months old! (bad reflux). How much do you think she is throwing up at a time? A tablespoon, or a whole feed?

BF babies can sometimes not poo for days! Mine didn't go once for 10 days. Just using every single part of the milk. If your baby hasn't pooed for a few days, and has a hard stomach and appears uncomfortable then they may have trapped wind or be a bit constipated. If they haven't pooed for a few days, but still have a soft tummy and appear comfortable then I wouldn't worry.

DS has always been a sicky baby (now 8mo) - woe betide sitting down to feed him without a muslin to hand, or handing him over to someone else without one strategically placed!

The outreach nurse suggested he was probably taking too much milk on, which probably was/is the case (he is so greedy, now doing the same with food).

We did go see the GP when he was a few months as he was screaming and arching his back quite a bit, and he lost his voice I think due to the vomiting and screaming, and we were given gaviscon for reflux. That was a real pain to administer, and it sort of settled on its own after a few weeks anyway. His paediatrician said as long as it is not causing him pain and it is not buckets and buckets of vomit, it is more a nuisance than anything else (a laundry problem, as ZuleikaD said!), and should go in time.
