Hello everyone,
I need a bit of advice from other mums,my 5week old bf whenever he wants to during the day, usually at about 3 hours intervals and at3-4 hours at night time.is this ok for this age?he's only staying 10-15 min tops on the breast and I'm not sure if he's getting all he needs from me.
Thanks

my DS was an efficient feeder like you, just short spells every 3 hours. It sounds fine but depends on if you have issues about his weight? You can't over-feed a breastfed baby. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be here soon :)

congratualtions.

Thank you for answering,so far no problems with the weight gain, just slower than when he was feeding at 2.5-3 hours.i offer whenever he seems to be hungry but then he spits back a lot if he stay longer, like 20 min, on the breast.I just wasn't sure if what I'm doing is ok or not so I wondered what other mums did.

Sounds fine if he's putting on weight ok and thriving - he's probably just got efficient. DD used to take a full feed in less than 8 minutes.

My DS has never fed for very long, & compared to my DD, it was a bit of a shock!! I was concerned that it was mainly due to his tongue tie, but even since he's had it done, he doesn't often feed for longer than 20mins, maybe a 30+mins session once a day.

As long as your LO is content after a feed, & doesn't need another feed immediately after, he's probably just a fast eater!!

I used to worry about my first because after the initial marathon feeding sessions, she used to be all done and dusted within 10 mins! But as long as your baby seems happy and you feed him when he wants, I'm sure he's fine. But don't be surprised by the growth spurts. Both of mine would be pretty quick in the main but occasionally want to feed all day when they needed to up the supplies. Good luck and try not to worry - I did all the time and there really was nothing to worry about, looking back.

Same here. DD did the marathon feeds in the first few weeks and then after that 10 mins max. She's never had any problems with weight gain and is just nice and fast!
