I amb a bit of a mess at the minute. DS3 is 3 months old and bf. I have had mild mastitis twice in r breast. Seemed to heal with paracetamol and massage. But r breast became very sore starting last weekend. When he latched became more painful each day, had stabbing pains in breast too. Thought it was thrush, although mouth clear. Made app with gp for next amb.Overnight r breast became AGONY. Rock hard, swollen and VERY sore. Gp said mastitis and possible start of abscess. Gave antib's. But these have given me SEVERE abdo pain. Can't eat or sleep. R breast is getting better. But l breast is now agony when he feeds! If it is thrush-which it must be-how do I treat it? I'm miserable. Sorry so long too. Thanks.

Sounds worse than thrush to me - mastitis and abscess much more likely - keep taking your anti biotics and get a load of live yoghurt down you too. Someone will be along with better advice I'm sure. Poor you x

woopsidaisy · 24/11/2012 19:55

Thanks Musttidy. Sympathy much appreciated. I started live yogurt today-do I just take one daily? I can't take antib's-they are destroying my stomach! I haven't taken them since yesterday at 12m/d-and stomach still agony.

If I were you I'd ring nhs direct and see what they say - if it is an abcess and yu don't take the ab's you could be in real trouble. They might suggest you see te OOH doctor to see if they can change the anti biotics. Think you can take as much live yog as you like - it won't do you any harm. Really, get some advice as it could get a lot worse Sad

Also, just re read post - the L is not hard like the R was? Sting-y rather than agony? If so might be thrush as you need something for that too- something for the nipple and something for his mouth. My doc gave me two different things, drops for baby and cream for me IIRC. Even if R breast is a bit better it could get bad again if you don't take the full course and abcess can be dreadful, and will affect your bf.
Am v sympathetic - looking after 3 with a small baby and feeling awful is lousy. Really hope you get better soon.

Sympathy from me too. Mastitis is awful. Sad I would contact the out of hours doc ASAP to be honest, mastitis can develop v quickly & be serious.

Which antibiotics are you on? Flucloxacillin are the recommended treatment for mastitis. Do you have problems with penicillin?

woopsidaisy · 24/11/2012 21:59

Yes, it was fluclox, but new script is for erythromycin. I haven't taken that yet though, as stomach so sore, and feel so nauseated. Don't think it would stay down. Gah, I just wish I felt ok! Wee man seems to bé on growth spurt too, up for 7 feeds last night! OK, will ring OOH tomorrow if still the same. Thanks for all the advice and sympathy ladies.

I felt nauseous & vomited with mastitis, so it could be that. Growth spurt is good timing in that he feeds lots. Hope you feel better soon...Smile

woopsidaisy · 25/11/2012 20:03
