Three week old occasional mega voms!

Does anyone know if it's normal for a three week old to occasional vomit up huge amounts of milk? My ds has done the four times in the last seven days, every time when I've been holding him (lucky me) and always after he's been very unsettled and wanting to feed constantly.

Is he just over eating? And if he is, why?

He also seems to have quite a lot of burps for an ebf baby, could it be to do with this.

My dd was never ever sick, this is totally new to me :(

I think it could be something called reflux. You should make an appt with your GP asap and/or call your health visitor.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will along shortly.

Mine does this too after a big feed- she's 3 and a half weeks old. My midwife said it's just because she hasn't learnt to recognise what hunger feels like yet. I try and have breaks during feeds if I think she's having too much. If she's rooting or crying, a dummy can help. 15 minutes later she sometimes isn't as hungry as she was suggesting. I also think part of the problem is that I have a bit of an oversupply issue with my tits.
Apparently it's perfectly normal though- they just have tiny tummies. I think it's only likely to be a problem if they do not gain weight well or just aren't thriving.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure it's reflux as he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort at all, he doesn't even cry after he's been sick, just looks a bit mystified! And also it hardly ever happens, once every other day or so, but I will bear it in mind.

It could easily be from overeating. I couldn't breastfeed dd and I'm so enjoying just being able to pop a boob out rather than making up a bottle that I do it whenever he's fussing!

Will try to hold off and stick to only once every 2 hours. Londonmrss we must have matching babies, mine was born on the 28th oct. Hope you're getting some sleep!

My 15wo does this occasionally. Proper projectile Exorcist style vomits! I'd say about once a week? She's very possetty too, I'd say she brings back a little after every feed. Like you I don't think it's true reflux (I work with prems so I know the discomfort reflux causes, and she usually smiles after a big vomit!), I think it's a mixture of taking too much at a time and wind.

As your DS is still so young I wouldn't try to hold off feeding him, your supply is being established and you can't over feed him as, like you have seen, he will just bring it back up!

My DS was a terribly sicky baby and would almost always bring up a little bit after a feed, thank goodness for muslin cloths!

See that's what's weird, he never brings up anything after feeds usually, no posset, no sicky burps, nothing! Just the mega pukes.

I do agree that feeding on demand is important just now. Hmm, not sure what to do.

I don't really mind him being sick on me, I just want to be sure it's nothing to worry about. It's not projectile or violent at all, quite gentle in fact, just copious!

Cordiality, my ds3 was the same at that age. He is 11wks now & is rarely sick. I googled and found out lots of different suggestions but think it's often down to an immature digestive system.

I really would not hold off feeding though in these early weeks, as it could affect supply. As long as he's not in any discomfort I wouldn't worry too much.

my EBF 7 week old did this, I let him have a dummy on day 8 as I thought he was comfort sucking and now he's hardly ever sick. I think the advice is not to give a dummy though so it might depend on your baby and how feeding is going primarily.
