Poor poor you. I had it with all 4 ds. Worst with ds3. A friend into aromatherapy gave me a book called The fragrant pharmacy by Valerie Ann Worwood.
To sooth rock solid aching boobs she suggests a blend of 15 drops Chamomile German, 10 drops Lavender 5 drops Eucalyptus. Mix, put 10 drops of this mixture in a saucer of warm Chamomile tea soak a muslin in it and then wrap round that poorly boob!
Drink loads of water, keep feeding.
If above isn't soothing see GP for antibiotics and take ibruprofen. Check with pharmacist but I was tols it was ok to take whilst feeding.
Hope these suggestions help - I'll be thibking of yaSmile

Have you tried ibruprofen? It's anti inflamatry and my hv suggested it. Do check its ok to take though. I was told it was but the packaging usually says ask your doc

katzg, how long have you been taking the antibiotics? If its been for more than three days and you are no better you should go back to the gp - they may need to give you a higher dose and can also prescribe stronger painkillers. You should be able to take ibuprofen even if you can't have aspirin (my dh can) but maybe check with gp or pharmacist first. I put up with recurring mastitis for too long and eventually got an abscess (and that was another type of pain altogether!) So I would at least speak to the gp on the phone....

i've got this as well - aare u on the right antibotics/a strong enough dose? I developed the hardness and tenderness on sunday got to the dr's monday morning and by the evening the boob was a lot softer. not we're having other issues but the boobs seem to be all round more comfortable and not hard.

also just been to boots and u can have ibrufen but not parocetamol. (sp)

katzg · 30/03/2006 12:39

was going to give it til tomorrow - have antibiotics sinces tuesday so half way through day 3.

pain is less now but have a definealt lump now, which wasn't there on tuesday at the gp's.

trying to aviod too much meds because i'm still breastfeeding, so just taking the antibiotics and occasional paracetemol (which gp said was ok) when get headache, main cause of breastpain is moving, eg walking down the stairs, so i'm mainly just lying on the sofa!

Poor you Sad I had it last week and managed to clear the lump by massaging towards the nipple whilst feeding, expressing by hand if not empty and when I had a really big lump that wouldn't shift, I got in a deep warm bath and massaged with my boob under the water, loads more milk came out even tho I had already fed and expressed and that seemed to help clear it. I do agree that if it isn't getting better very soon you should go back. Also drink lots and don't wait untill you feel full or the baby wakes to feed do it as often as you need to.

Hope you feel better soon

katzg · 30/03/2006 15:48

the big problem is that i have just stopped about a week ago giving dd2 day time breastfeeds and only feeding her at night (she 9.5months)and i don't really want to go backwardsa s it has taken ages to get her take formula from a cup. but i hvae ofund that nice warm baths help with the pain!

its feeling a lot better this pm, it now only hurts to the touch and when i go up and down the stairs, which is an improvment on a continuous pain!

Big sympathy, don't remember feeling iller than with mastitis Sad

katzg · 30/03/2006 16:47

i'm beginning to suspect that the pain is worse than childbirth - at least that was productive!

Go to the doctors hun he will give you antibiotics and it won't affect feeding, i had it a few weeks ago my little boy is 6wks old if you don't catch it soon you may need an operation, make sure you express your milk as mastitus is a blocked milk duct, i do roughly the same as you i bottle feed at night and breast during the day unless i'm out and then i take a bottle but one of the night feeds i breast feed to help with milk flow so it doesn't dry up but seriously you must see your gp if you have mastitus before it goes to far
