Breastfeeding lying down... how do you swap sides?

You would think I might have worked this out since I've been doing this for nearly 8 months Wink, but no...

I feed ds lying down (at night and first thing), with him lying alongside me. Fine so far, but what do you do when you want to put him on the other breast? I tend to get on my hands and knees and scoot him under me (if I roll him across my tummy I am liable to get a faceful!) - but surely there must be an easier way? I seem to make very hard work of it and invariably wake dh in the process.

No you're right, scoot him under you if someone else is in the bed.
I used to feed them in an empty bed (only cos dh got banished to the spare room) and I would sit up and just change sides with them still lying on the bed.

Thanks suzy, keep wondering if I'm missing a trick, I feel like an awkward heffalump doing it when I'm only a little thing really!

I used to do what you're doing, I think. Not comfortable, exactly, but it works, and nobody gets smushed.

I always start with her on my left, in the middle of the bed, and just roll over more for the other side, onto my tummy- it works for us. dd is 6.5mo.

ah yes, should add that i am norkularly challenged, so aiming boobs in his direction isn't possible, he has to get very close to the source!

You could hold him in your arms and just roll him over the top of your body so he ends up on the other side. You don't have to wake up so much that way and it only takes a second!

threelittlebabies · 27/03/2006 09:01

Consider myself norkularly challenged in the opposite way! Blush Though it has come in handy for not turning over when feeding, about its only plus!! Wink

Pretty much what everyone else has said. Bes in an empty bed where you install the baby in the middle and just swap sides or I have managed to lean over DD to feed from the other side (and I'm not exactly huge in the nork department).

A lot of the time though, DD only wants one side at these times.

I have a friend who just feeds on one side in the night and its the same night every night, so that the baby is safe between her and DH. She fed 5 babies to 6.5 mths so it must have worked!

popsycalindisguise · 27/03/2006 19:47

i used to do what you do but now i just lie in the same position, lie himon his back and roll slightly....
hmmm
night feeds ought to have stopped here really :)

popsycalindisguise · 27/03/2006 19:47

i dont have big boobs either....pretty average

Miaou · 27/03/2006 21:21

Just wanted to revive this thread to say thank you for the advice, particularly those who explained how to feed from both boobs without swapping him (or me) over ... I've cracked it!! Dream feeds are soooo much easier now, I can totally relax and it saves him waking up and grumbling whilst I hoick him around....Grin thanks guys!!

Bump because a) I'm disproportionatly chuffed with my achievement and b) I want to thank you all personally for pointing out that it can be done even when norkularly challenged.... mwah mwah mwah
