Has anyone taken omeprazole whilst breastfeeding? I have been taking it as I was told it colud be taken in pregnancy so didn't expect it to be a problem breastfeeding. In fact prescribed some in hospital.
However, have been googling and advice varies.
Any thoughts. Will check with doctor Monday.
Thank you

if your unsure you could check with the BfN drugs in breastmilk helpline you can either ring them or email. they have a specialist pharmacist who's really knows her stuff.

You can also check on lact med website to www.nlm.nih.gov/news/lactmed_announce_06.html

My DS was prescribed it as a baby so would have thought it's fine, but I would contact the Breastfeeding Network as MigGril suggests.

Thank you. GP said I should avoid if possible even though website above reckons it is ok. Shame they never told me that allthrough my pregnancy.

I would trust the BfN on this over a GP. They usually say avoid everything! BfN know their stuff.

Thank you. Not going to stress about it. I will take gaviscon instead for now but if I need the odd tablet I will go for it.

Email the bfn. They will reassure you. I took it when pregnant and when breastfeeding for over a year.

I took omeprazole alongside naproxen (anti-inflammatory) whilst breast-feeding, having looked at the data sheets with my GP. For me the (minor) contraindications were a necessary risk.
