DS 5 weeks old, tandem feeding, and yet soft breasts already?

Despite what seems on the face of it to be a reasonable latch and plenty of feeding, DS has been very slow in gaining weight; following other threads, I've been trying to make sure that milk transfer is adequate by ensuring he stays on each breast until he comes off by himself and then always offering the other breast and back to the first, etc, until he won't take more. This can mean a pretty long feed. He doesn't always seem very satisfied during the feed and he often seems to want another feed quite soon after the last one finishes, so I'm also getting advice on whether there could be a tongue tie affecting his feeding (as per tt thread). The HV today thought he has thrush which the GP is less sure about but has given me a prescription for in any case.

Plenty of wet nappies, fewer pooey nappies: he had 2 or 3 a day till a few days ago, then 1 a day for a couple of days, then no poos since the night before last.

DD, who is 2, is having about one feed a day, not more than five or max ten minutes on one boob, after DS has already fed from that boob. Finally, we're giving one ff topup a day to give me a break in the evening.

The main question following all this background; should I be concerned that today and yesterday (and maybe a bit before that but not very much longer) my breasts have felt soft most of the time? Could I be doing something that is reducing my milk supply (apart from the one topup) and could my supply be genuinely low at present? Or is it just down to the fact that I am feeding him so much of the day? My breasts aren't leaking spontaneously but when I squeeze milk does come out.

I found with my second that I leaked a lot less and my supply seemed to setual a lot fast then first time round. So don't think them feeling soft is really an indicator of any problems.

Are you getting good breastfeeding support a it sounds like you have a lot going on?

I didn't get the giant grapefruit boobs so much with DD2. They still worked fine though.

Thanks for the input on the soft boobs! Mig, I have had good bf support in previous weeks, thanks. I haven't felt like the bf is itself a problem until now tho now I'm worried about, well, not quite anything and everything but nearly...

I posted about my soft boobs when dd2 was wee. I never got engorged & very rarely felt full, right from the early days. The consensus was it is fine, not indicative of any issues.

Try not to worry sounds like your doing well. Keep seeking more help if you feel things aren't.

I didn't leak, rarely got engorged and never felt full with dc2 who was ebf until 24 weeks and he weighed over 17lb at 3 months.
I think it's a second child thing:your body is just much better at the supply and demand thing.

Hang in there!
