Formula Milk - really stupid question!

DS has always been BF but is now beginning to take his afternoon drink from a beaker so I'm going to use formula. I haven't used it before. What I don't know is does it need to be reheated or can he have it cold?

TIA!

How old is he? If over 6 months (ish) I would see if he would take it cold (saves you the hassle of having to warm it up).

They can have it cold, room temperature or warm. I never heated mine because it's far easier when out & about to be able to give it cold/room temp. Does that help?

he's nearly 9 mths. Great - as you say it makes it much easier if I don't need to reheat.

Thanks ladies!

To be perfectly honest if you are breasteeding the rest of the time I wouldn't bother with formula.

Ds had cows milk on the afternoons when I worked, as I was breastfeeding him morning and night I figured it wasn't his main drink and was easier and cheaper than formula.

I probably wouldn't bother with formula either, if he's having lots of breastfeeds. Water is fine for regular drinks, and now is a good time to get them used to it ...

Just give water - miles cheaper and your ds will take what he needs in his breastfeeds.

Oooh you've all said it - give him water or cow's milk - he will be getting all the nutrients he needs from his other feeds. Just don't include any cows milk drink in any calculation of his "milk" intake (ie treat it like water or juice) as it won't be fulfilling his nutritional requirements.

Also, be careful that cow's milk doesn't become his main drink before 12 months. A little bit here and there is fine. But not as a main drink -- although I can't remember why this is.

I actually think formula is a good thing if he likes it. It has a lot more nutrition than cow's milk. Water is good too. It also promotes healthy drinking habits for later (i.e. he may drink water rather than nasty fruit shoots later on)
