i have a 16 week girl who drinks 9 oz approx 5 hours apart. if i try to feed her earlier she will outright refuse and cry. i have been told that this amount is too much and the time is too long inbetween. what does your baby take? she was 9lb 11oz at birth and is now 17lb 4oz. what was your baby at birth and what do they weigh now? just so i can get some comparison

Difficult to compare as ds is mixed fed, but typically will take up to 8oz every 3 hrs, including during the night.
In between feeds he also gets bf if he's upset, thirsty etc which usually reduces his next feed to approx 5oz.
He was 7.15 at birth and is approx 15lbs now.
5 hrs does seem a long time but I'm no expert I'll confess :)

Well, this is my first message on the Mumsnet so please forgive me if this message in a wrong column!
My son is 18 weeks old and he can not go on without screaming for longer than two hours without a feed! I am breastfeeding him probably every hour/an hour and a half-it's nightmare.I sometimes top him up before bed with Aptamil of around 120 ml(i was adviced to do so by several midwifes) but it doesn't seem makes any difference-he still wakes up after an hour and so goes on like that all night! And,ofcourse,by consuming so much milk without many breaks in between he is extremely windy baby which probably is the reason why he can not sleep...
Any suggestions or advice would be great-please help!!!
Thanks so much in advance!

P.S.I am no expert on feeding(obviously) but if your girl is gaining weight,is healthy and content i don't see why five hours is a problem.Even some newborns feed in intervals of three to four hours so at 16 weeks perhaps it's just normal for her?...
I am sorry I can not be more help!

Doroteja have you had your latch checked by a BFC?

Doroteja · 17/09/2012 11:32

Thank you very much for the reply.Yes he's latching on properly.I am attending BF support group+about dozen of midwifes have sat with me and watched me feeding-all seems fine from latching on point of view. Another terrible night last night and i don't know to whom to turn for help. I just don't understand what is the problem and what should i change or do differentely.
Thank you for the support anyway.

Sorry can't answer your question at the moment Doroteja, but have you rung one of the Bfing Helplines, you might get some information and support there.

ally don't know sorry but hopefully this will bump for you Smile

Loislane78 · 17/09/2012 12:50

ally who told you that was too long or too much and is her weight above what it should be for her age? Unless it is I don't see why that is a problem?

My LO is not quite 5 wks and I EBF on demand. Last night was a record that she went 4.5 hrs between feeds. Usually its 2-3hrs or cluster feeds and I count myself incredibly lucky! MW, bf counsellor and HV have had no problems with this so at 16 wks why is 5 hrs too long?
