Night feed: boob - bum - boob?

Hello. My 8wo DS wakes once in the night for a breast feed. I feed from one boob, change his bum, then feed from the other and put him back down in his moses basket. He used to be very sleepy after the second side and settle really quickly back to sleep, but over the last few nights he's been wide awake by the time I've finished feeding and much harder to settle.
I was wondering what everyone's night feed routine is. Should I change his nappy first, then just feed him from one side and put him down? My worry is that he will wake earlier in the morning because he will be hungrier. And do you always change your LOs nappy during a night feed? (DS poos A LOT!)
Thanks

I now change my DD's nappy first, then feed her. I found that if I left nappy changing until last, it woke her up again and she'd want to play (Hmm Grin - I always played with her) and she generally falls asleep while suckling.

I only changed nappies if they pooed in the night. Is he in a sleeping bag?

I used to debate this with myself all the time lol! I settled on bum change first then feed till she slept. Only thing is my dd pooed after most feeds so it was a bit hit and miss. My dd stopped pooing at night at about 11 ish weeks and although she still goes daily its not at night! That makes things much easier! Hopefully your lo will soon stop pooing at night too!

I've started to only change DD's (8 wks) nappy if it's dirty and I find her easier to settle after the night feed now. However, she only poos about every other day and usually during the morning or afternoon. I use pampers baby dry nappies at night.

I stopped changing DD's nappy when she was 2 weeks old after my midwife friend visited and laughed at me and explained you only do it if it's dirty. I've not looked back and she's always been fine staying in the same nappy.

I also leave DD2 in the same nappy all night unless she poo's.

With DD1 I changed her every feed. No idea why looking back. Now I just pick DD2 up, feed and straight back into her bed. She barely wakes up and goes right back off to sleep.

If its a dirty nappy I would change before feed.

Another who only changes dirty nappies at night - both Pampers and Huggies have always seen DS through 12 hrs with no probs. He still wakes every 2hrs at 17w so am so pleased all I have to do is latch him on and fall back to sleep!

fluffacloud · 23/08/2012 19:46

Much the same as everyone else, I only change if its dirty or very full - my DD2 could pee for England!

As she is very fidgety and a world class wetter we had to try a few brands before we managed all night - pampers baby dry are the best fit for her and haven't leaked....yet Grin

i only every changed pooey nappies or if it was SOAKING wet with wee. do NOT change nappies if you dont REALLY need to!

runlolarun10 · 23/08/2012 22:40

Thanks all. Will definitely drop the nappy change then. Silly question, but how do you know if the nappy's dirty?!Confused Do you just have a peek?! If bf-ing, do you offer both sides at night as I always do during the day.

I use cloth nappies during the day btw, so just change every couple of hours so not used to working out how wet etc disposables are.

I smell her bum to see if it's dirty.

I offer both boobs night and day. My thinking at night is that I want her to take as much as possible so that she sleeps longer till her next feed.

HarlettOScara · 23/08/2012 22:47

I just have a sniff. It's generally obvious if she's had a poo. If I'm not sure then I open the nappy for a look.

My mum pokes her finger in the side of the nappy to check Shock She's hardcore is my Mum Grin
