Oral thrush

Hi all. My ds has been diagnosed today with thrush in his mouth. He is 7 months and bf regularly. He has solids twice a day and has refused all feeds all day today. Doctor was surprised I was still bf because of his age and has given me Nystan liquid for treatment I asked the 'trainee doctor' if I needed to be treated and he said no?? The bf helpline advised me I did and that the drops were not the correct treatment for him. I'm so pissed off.... Why can't professionals be bloody educated about breast feeding and all the issues and problems that come wit it!

Unfortunately lots of health professionals are still very ignorant when it comes to thrush. What you need is Daktarin oral gel for your DS, and Daktarin 2% cream for your nipples. It's important to treat both of you, otherwise you could be passing the infection backwards and forwards between you, and you'll never get rid of it. You can buy them both over the counter if you can't be bothered to go back to the doctor.

Ah that's brilliant to know! I was going to go to out of hours at the hospital today but I will go to the chemist instead!! Thank you!!

No worries. I've suffered from thrush myself, and beleive me it is agony, so you want to avoid catching it yourself if you possibly can! A lactation consultant told me to use the oral gel 4 times daily, instead of the twice daily advice on the instructions.

This leaflet from the Breatfeeding Network is really useful, as it has a section for medical professionals that you can show to your doctor if you do need to go back:
