5 week old today ds has been feeding/sucking since six this evening, he will suck/feed to sleep and usually when I put him in his Moses basket he goes straight to sleep but tonight he is eyes wide open and trying to suck his hand and then screaming to the point of sweating through his vest if I don't pick him up. He is quite warm so im presuming he is thirsty and maybe going through a growth spurt. He's a big baby, on the 91st centile (never quite sure what that means) and he is now very over tired. I've got the windows open and the ceiling fan on full blast and I don't understand how he can still be awake. Im slowly going a bit mental and feel sorry for myself and almost scared to fall asleep when he does because im so tired im worried I won't hear him, can someone come and hold my hand.

I have a baby the same age! So not an expert but I'd say just go with it tonight, sounds like its out of the ordinary so if he needs extra hugs just do it. Cuddle him, take him for a walk around the house, into the garden if poss, try to relax and just give him your hugs, it'll pass and you'll soon be wondering what it was all about!

Mine is like that when he is a bit constipated and I know it's only a matter of time before he fills his nappy and settles quicker.

I bet he'll be all settled by 11.30pm, that's my bet!

How are you at the moment?

Hyperballad · 14/08/2012 21:54

Sorry I should have said, this happened to us two nights ago, and he is as chilled as ever tonight, you'd think I've swapped babies!

It's really natural to feel a bit crazy with the crying, have you got a friend you can call?

thingamajig · 14/08/2012 21:59

I feel your pain. You are doing a great job.
Do you have a thermometer? If is possible that he has picked up a bug and has a temperature, and that is why he is hot and upset. If his temp is over 37C, give him some calpol (I think, I can't remember if you can give it so young, if not phone NHS direct). Other than that, strip him off, and sponge with water.
It could well be that there is nothing wrong with him, it is hot and humid and screaming makes him hot.
Does he sleep in the same room as you? If he does, you WILL wake up when he does. In you position I would go to bed with him next to me, attached to me (not if you have been smoking/drinking/otherwise more drowsy than usual) and try putting him in his cot when he is asleep.
I can't remember the advice on whether or not to give cool boiled water to such a young one, maybe someone will be along soon who does.
Remember, if you really can't cope and are thinking of doing something silly, he will come to no harm if you put him in his cot and go outside for 5 minutes.

thingamajig · 14/08/2012 22:02

BY the way, 91st centile means that he is bigger than 91 percent of babies. If you went out and found 100 5-week-olds and lined them up in order of weight, he would be ninth from the top.

Susieloo · 14/08/2012 22:07

Thank you hyperSmile

Ive just put him down and he seems to have gone to sleep so Ive just climbed into bed, he's next to me so I hope i hear him if he wakes up, he's been like this a couple of times before and it was hot then too, he really seems to hate the heat, I just find it really hard to see him so distressed, hopefully he will have fed enough to get at least a couple of hours now, he's not really had a proper decent sleep in the day and I think that's why he was getting himself so worked up because he was so tired.

Thank you for replyingSmile

Thank you thingamajig Smile

I just find it really upsetting rather than anything else to see him so distressed or like he's in pain and I can't comfort him other than feed him which only seems to work temporarily, I did check his temperature earlier and it said normal, dss is staying with us this week and is saying he feels unwell and hot so I'm wondering if it is a bug, I'll call the hv in the morning or nhs direct if he is still the same when he next wakes up, I've just felt his head and he's cooled down loads since he's been asleep so hopefully he will be able to get some sleep-and me too!!

Thank you againSmile

Good luck, hope you get some sleep, and like the other poster says don't worry you will wake up! I'll check in on your thread when I'm doing my night feeds, see how you are. It might be me that needs the moral support by then! Smile

narmada · 14/08/2012 22:28

Shhhh.... hope you're asleep now.

Could be the heat, could well be a growth spurt - this can cause them to be fussier and want to feed all the time as they work to up your supply for their future needs. No temperature is good :)

It's normal you feel stressed when he's distressed and crying. It triggers a hormonal reaction in you which acts to make you feel stressed so you respond to his needs. Ahhh, nature's a very clever thing. Don't worry about hearing him if he wakes. You will. And if you're zonked, he will just make more noise until you attend to him....

Hyperballad · 15/08/2012 01:53

Hello! How's it going?

Susieloo · 15/08/2012 01:55

Thank you narm

He's just woken up for a feed and he's still warm but no swearing so hopefully he can have a drink and catch up on some more sleep.

I really hope it rains today!!

Hello Hyper!!

Our babies must be on the same schedule!!

Just as I posted that he's just started to stir so I don't think he's going straight back to sleep like last night!

I think the last time this happened I ended up sleeping downstairs with the baby because it was cooler, if he wakes again in the next half an hour I shall take him downstairs to see if that helps Smile.

Thank you for checking in

Ha! That's funny! Well you sound in good spirits considering the evening you've had! Mines just had both boobs and is not fully asleep yet, not going to attempt the Moses for at least another 5 minutes!

It is soooo hot in this room too, just no way of cooling it, baby in vest with just a thin sheet for a bit of comfort.

Hyperballad · 15/08/2012 02:15

When he is hot and bothered like tonight does he 'growl' at your boob like mine does?!

Susieloo · 15/08/2012 02:34

Yes!! He gets major boob anger!! He scratches as well and pulls himself off my boob really viciously!

We are down stairs now and he is wide awake which is a new development, he feeds really badly when he is like this so takes in too much air and last time he ended up with green stringy poo!!

I honestly don't know how he is not flat out, he's had so little sleep in the day and only three hours now, very unusual, he's like a different baby

OP posts:
Hyperballad · 15/08/2012 02:48

Yes! Everything you say is so familiar!! My babe has spent loads of time awake the last week, he is just so alert, seems to be learning and taking things in constantly!

I've had him in the Moses about 5 minutes so I'm hoping he stays there! Unfortunately he'll wake whatever by 4am for another feed.

Hmmm the growling and scratching and spitting the nipple out like they are disgusted with it makes it all the more harder to cope with doesn't it! I try to laugh! Because actually in the day it is quite funny, it's just night time when it really ain't funny!!

Getting my head down now, Smile

Hyperballad · 15/08/2012 02:59

Bugger! I'm feeding again!

Susieloo · 15/08/2012 04:52

Baby has been asleep for about an hour and a half but I think he's got a temperature, dss has just woken up with a raging temperature and has thrown up and we've just sponged him off because we've run out of calpolSad

Baby feels hot to me but I'm not sure what's normal. I'm going to ring nhs direct I think to see what they suggest.

Hope you manage to get back to sleepGrin

Maybe the baby hasn't got a temperature now!! God this baby stuff is hardSmile I'm now far too tired to sleep so no idea how I shall get through today, i shall keep remembering those that have gone before and that this too shall passGrin

Hyperballad · 15/08/2012 06:00

Oh dear your having a right time of it, hope the boys have settled down a bit now and are not too ill.

My babe took several top ups and 4 attempts to get him in his Moses asleep! Hoping this feed will be more straightforward!

Susieloo · 15/08/2012 07:56

I took the baby to the shop and got some calpol for dss and some infacol for the little one, I think his temperature when he is hot is good old fashioned wind, he's been straining so hard all night and waking himself up and then crying he just gets himself in a right state, he's finally asleep by an open door with his babygro open looking like mini elvis, dp has taken the day off work to look after dss so I can keep the baby away from the plagued one, my boobs have just filled up so I think he will be awake soon and then hopefully get some more sleep.

Thank you for the company last night, sometimes I'm not sure what I would do without all the lovely people on hereGrin
