Thinking of weaning off breast- not a clue what to do!

Hello all,

My DS is 10 months old and I'm trying to get him to drink less from the breast. I'm not entirely sure when I would like to completely stop with BFing but I'm thinking between the ages of 12-18mths. He eats 3 solid meals a day and has recently started to have a lot more snacks too. He will drink diluted juice from a sippy cup when it's offered (although I wouldn't say he drinks a lot) yet he still demands the breast. Admittedly, some days he can go from mid-morning to early evening without it but this is usually when we're out and about and I suppose he's distracted. He still wakes during the night and the hours he wakes are always completely random. I have been trying to stop feeding him through the night by trying to just cuddle him to sleep or giving him the breast but pulling him off mid-feed. This is working to some extent- either the cuddling works or he allows me to put him back to bed after his mini-feed (either way he's still waking 2-3 times a night!)

This morning I fed him at 6am, he ate breakfast at 7 then went to sleep from 8-9.30. At around 10 am he was flinging himself at my boobs so I let him drink as we were about to nip out. He had some baby crisps and a couple of rice cakes then at 11.30 he started to get sleepy and was rooting around for milk again. How can I reduce these feeds?

Also, when I do decide to wean him off the breast, what should I give him and how? He has never had a bottle, should I start to offer him one or just give him his sippy cup? It would just seem weird giving him his bedtime milk from a sippy cup though, wouldn't it? I honestly have no idea how to do this??! Confused.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Don't give him a bottle as then you'll have to go through that weaning process again. He will be fine with milk from a sippy cup. Drop one feed at a time so maybe do the nighttime feed from a cup but keep on breast first thing, and gradually reduce. And don't give up once you've decided to do it. He's eating so he won't starve if he refuses the cup and then you sent him to bed anyway.
