Is my BF DS getting enough milk?

DS is just coming up to 8 weeks. Yesterday and today he has fed a lot more than usual which I was putting down to the heat. However today he fed for 3 hours constantly on the breast (did swap sides) had a half hour break and then was back on. He normally settles in his cot around 9pm and will sleep until 1/2 am but last night and tonight he just doesn't seem settled? Is this to do with my milk and he's not satisfied or is it the heat etc? I'm now worrying thinking he doesn't seem to have put much weight on either but he's due to be weighed on Wednesday. Not sure if I should bother the HV or not or if I'm being paranoid!

He's probably going to have a growth spurt. Both of mine did this sort of thing every now and then. Hard to pinpoint a reason, but if there are wet nappies like usual he's getting enough. I would just let him do what he wants and it will settle down again in a day or two. Stock up on the nipple cream and if possible get someone to bring you drinks and sarnies etc!

I think bf babies fed on demand are usually able to regulate your supply of milk and their need for it so a feeding frenzy will increase your milk supply.

I have a feeling that 8 weeks is a growth spurt - which would explain the increase in feeding. It also means that all his behaviors etc that you've just figured out will change. babies are designed to keep you on your toes; as soon as you think you have it sorted they change the goal posts.

If his weight is ok in Wednesday (which it probably will be) then you're doing brilliantly.

Yup. Growth spurt - especially of he is cluster feeding - means feeds close together.
Trust your milk Smile

It's a growth spurt! Really normal behaviour, it will pass, although sadly the evening cluster feeding will probably last longer.

BTW, in a few weeks, your breasts will stop feeling full between feeds, and feel soft and pretty much like normal. Do not panic. You still have milk. This just means your supply has changed from being post-birth-hormone driven to being supply and demand hormone driven.

(Sorry for random post. Just, nobody ever tells you this and it can come as a bit of a shock!)

If he is weeing plenty and pooing the normal amount for him he is getting enough - babies go through phases of feeding more than usual and the great thing about breast feeding is that you respond to that and give him what he needs, be that more energy rich milk when he is growing like crazy or more dilute milk when it's hot and he needs the hydration. Just make sure you eat and drink plenty, to keep yourself going apart from anything else!

That's great thank you for the reassurance! I'll wait until Wednesday and if his weight is good I'll stop worrying! Thanks
