12wo FF baby on Aptamil Pepti is always hungry...

DD2 is putting on weight well, although she is on Aptamil Pepti for suspected lactose intolerance, and gaviscon for suspected reflux. She is doing well, and rarely cries- however, she seems to be feeding constantly through the day.

Yesterday and today she took 3 hours to drink a 7oz bottle and had four bottles back to back. She sleeps for 7 hours at night, but hardly sleeps during the day, although occasionally she sleeps all day waking only for feeds.

She just seems to be hungry all the time.

Any ideas as to what I can do? The GP has said that she is overfeeding and advised that I give her 4oz every 3 hours and nothing more. Needless to say, I'm not following that advice.

The sucking can relieve the pain of the reflux. Someone should come along soon with more info than me but that is what I remember from when ds was tiny.

is the gaviscon in the milk? It can make the milk thicker and you may need a faster teat so that she can get the milk out easier. It shouldnt take 3 hours to drink a bottle of milk so maybe she is struggling with the flow rate

There is however an aptimil pepti two which is suitable from 6m it's more like a follow on milk as that's exactly how my dd got. If you can just hang in there a little longer .... :)

TheHeir, that's what the doctor thought and advised that I used a dummy; but she seems starving. She hates the dummy.

vodka, I thought that too as the gaviscon is in the milk- but she is on tommee tippee variable flow teat and at night takes her feed in no time. It might be worth trying number two teats, though, thanks.

Wheresmycaffeine, did your DD do this too? Was there a big change on pepti 2? When did you wean her? Sorry for so many questions!

A few weeks after we got her put on pepti they seemed to "rebrand" and brought out a pepti one and pepti two. My dd managed to hold out that horrible hungry phase til she was old enough to have it at six months. I started weaning about five months ( well 19/20) weeks as she seemed ready and was swiping food. Then at around six months she stopped sleeping through and was hungry at night and also was grizzly again as she just wasn't getting enough from the milk and obviously food for her was just a little taster so that did t really count much. But she did better then on the pepti two it filled her up more although it all could be coincidence but it does have increased iron so that probably helped.

12 weeks is a normal time to go through a hungry phase though so hopefully your dc will just feed through it for a few days and settle back down.

As was mentioned above though sucking does relieve reflux pain does she have a dummy??? :)

tethersphotofinish · 10/08/2012 22:18

Thanks, Wheresmy. I have persevered with the dummy for three months now. She hates it! DD1 loved her dummy, and I loved it too (it was known as the 'off button' in our house Grin), but DD2 just looks at me like I've gone mental every time I put it in her mouth.

goes mad at thought of no dummy :o could it be a case of she's just tiring herself out feeding and isn't able to take enough in to completely tide her over?

Did she have suspected reflux before or after being put on pepti milk?if it was before then maybe it was all signs of the intolerance and she doesn't actually need the gaviscon and it's just thickening the
Milk making it thicker less easy to suck and she's tiring and not taking enough?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 10/08/2012 22:24

Dr suspected silent reflux with my dd but I pushed to try milk before I put her on any medication

tethersphotofinish · 10/08/2012 22:44

No, reflux was suspected a while after switch to pepti milk. I thought babies had to cry a lot for a dx of reflux; TBH, I thought DD was just a sicky baby. The Gaviscon has helped loads though, she's hardly sick at all now, so maybe it is reflux.

Maybe a bigger teat would be easier for her :)

I'll try one and report back. Thanks Smile

DOn;t know if it helps but DD fed like this at around 3/4 months and she didn;t have the problems your little one has had.
