DD pulling her own hair?

midori1999 · 10/08/2012 21:43

For a while now DD has been in the habit of pulling her own hair whilst nursing to sleep/tired and nursing. She does it repeatedly, but mostly not to hard.

Yesterday she was pulling really hard, in fact, pulling quite a bit (not very much to start with) of her hair out. I found it quite upsetting. Sad

Has anyone else's toddler done this? I'm reluctant to mention to HV in case she comes out with some old shite, but is it common|? Something I need to worry about?

How old is she?Is she playing with it and it comes out?Do you think it is a habit? Not sure I have the answers.

My DD does this, she's 7 months but has been doing it for approx 2-3 months. I used to (and still do) pull and twist my own hair when I'm tired (and when I was younger also sucked my thumb at the same time). I pull my own hair quite hard so I don't find it unusual that my DD does it. I'll be interested to see if she also twists and ties it in knots when she is older as I do.

Not sure if this is similar - but when I sucked my thumb (until the age of 17 when braces stopped my fun!!) I would tug my hair at the same time, I guess it was some sort of comfort thing. Does she get annoyed if you try to stop her?

Maybe give her something to play with, wear a beaded necklace that she can fiddle with?

My DD2 (14 mths) twirls and pulls her hair as a comfort thing, often while sucking her thumb. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about in her case. DD1 used to twiddle her tummy button whilst sucking her thumb, which frankly looked weird, especially when she sometimes pulled up her skirt / dress to get to her tummy! So actually I prefer DD2's hair-twiddling (not that I get a choice in the matter!).

Thanks.

She's 13 months. She's been doing it for a while, but never really pulled any out before. She wasn't pulling huge chunks out or anything, but lots of strands and her hair is still quite short and fine. If I try and stop her and hold her hand she gets agitated and wants to do it again. Sometimes she fiddles with the straps on my top and my hair if she can get hold of it (which I try not to let her as it hurts!).

I may try a nursing necklace and see if that distracts her.

Sounds like she's going to be a hair puller/twiddler. I hope my DD doesn't pull her own hair out but I know how comforting I still find it so not sure what I'd do in that situation.
