I have been slowly winding down bfing my 20 week old, but was hoping to keep last thing a night and first thing in the morning going for a while. However I got my period this am - does that mean I've dried up my supply? It's not the end of the world but I'd be a little sad.

No. (I've breastfed my child for more than 2 years since my periods came back.)

No it doesn't mean that at all, your period has been kick-started by the increased gap in between feeds but as long as you keep feeding you should still supply milk.

MousyMouse · 09/08/2012 11:19

no, supply might dip due to conflicting hormones but it doesn't dry up completly unless you stop feeding.

WheresMyCow · 09/08/2012 11:20

I'm sure that someone who knows more about the mechanics of breast feeding will come along soon, but I'm still feeding my 22 month old once a day and have been having periods since he was about 18 weeks old.

So no, I don't think that you have dried up your supply at all.

no, having your period does not mean that your milk will dry up.
some people do experience a dip in supply during their period, but it should return to normal once your period is over, or after the first day or 2

oh duh - actually that was a really stupid question, wasn't it? I have friends who are pregnant and breast feeding toddlers, so how else did they get pregnant?! Blush

Thanks for clearing that up. Yay!

And thanks also for the heads up about supply dip.

My periods seem to come back around 8 weeks but it has no impact on supply.

The last couple of times it came back once DDs were doing a 7-8 hour stretch in the night.

There is something you can take if your supply dips, I think it's evening primrose oil. Sorry on phone and can't search but you take it from ovulation through to your period.
