have a bit of a dilemma. am still bf dd but only once a day or so. went to gp today who has advised antibiotics for a nail problem but they cant be taken whilst bf. gp asked how old dd was and when i said did the whole raised eyebrows "oh you are still feeding her" thing. i dont know why people esp healthcare types always look so alarmed at "extended breastfeeding"
she isnt that old, still a baby really.

anyway i dont really want to stop bf as yet but then i do ideally need to start these antibiotics. not sure what to do, dont want to take a risk but if i am only bf once a day wouldnt any effect be minimal?

any thoughts?

what are they?
have you checked with the BFN or lactmed?

CMOTDibbler · 03/08/2012 11:11

Which ABs ? Most are suitable when bfing - lots of info in the BFN drugsheet

lactmed says ok for older children

i'm guessing it's not advised because there have not been many studies done on it.

i would say, and this is my opinion as a mum not a doctor or anything, that I personally would be happy taking it in your situation. your child is a 16 months and only feeding once a day so she is only going to take in a miniscule amount.

Maybe give it some thought. You have given her a brilliant 16 month run. Stopping is always a bit sad (I was also quite down about it for a little while) but for me it went really, really smoothly and after a while I actually entirely switched around to feeling very positive about the whole thing and being entirely my own physical person again. I didn't expect to feel that way, but I really did.

If it's for a fungal infection in your nails and you have to do a long course, I would get it over with. My Dsis had it and was an absolute pain, but went in the end with the a-bs. You don't want a fungal infection hanging around in your body.

If you're really not ready to stop, no choice other than to delay treatment I reckon - I really wouldn't take a strong drug and bf even once a day TBH.

thanks for link thisisyesterday. also great to hear your thoughts, am going to have a think about it and decide. i know dd doent really need bf still as such but its just such a lovely chilled time with her at end of day. maybe the thought of stopping is worse than just doing it?
