Hi,

I'm EBF but on Saturday I'm due to go out for dinner without baby for first time. I will try to feed her as much as I can before I go out but I obviously need to leave some with her to have should she need it. The problem is I don't know when to express. I don't want to muck up my milk as I think I'm producing the right amount (been so engorged at beginning but have evened out now I think) so when do I express? Will my body think more milk needed so try to produce more? I just don't want to be short for my dd next feed after I have expressed.

Sorry but am a little confused! Thanks :-)

I find I have most for expressing early in the day. If I need some because I am going somewhere I do 2 oz either before or after the first feed of the day, 2oz either before or after the second feed of the day and then if the baby doesn't need feeding, I do as much as poss before going out. If I need more than a 5oz bottle (unusual as I am not in the habit of missing two feeds in a row) I collect it over 2 days or use a formula top up.
How old is your baby? I started expressing quite early on and it did give me an oversupply at first but now it is absolutely fine (3 months). You won't be short for your next feed, you never run out of milk, it might take your baby a bit more time and effort to get it, but it will still be there.

Definitely in the morning! I used to express just after the first feed. In my mind (and I don't know if it's right) then DC wouldn't be too hungry straightaway and my milk would have time to replenish. That was before DC started finishing ALL my milk at every feed though!

You've got time before Saturday, so you can always express just one or two ounces a day - DD won't miss that on a daily basis and then you'll have enough for the weekend.

You won't run out of milk, don't worry.

Thank you both. DD is 9 weeks so we are feeding well now, just didn't want to rock the boat. Thank you for your help, I will try in the morning as this too is my fullest. I'm glad I won't run out of milk!! Lol!
