Constipated

My DD is almost 7 weeks old and breastfed with the occasional bottle of formula (perhaps 1 a day if that). We are currently away visiting friends and family which has sometimes made breastfeeding difficult. Because of this she has had a couple of bottles of ready made formula in the past 2 days. She is now incredibly constipated going from around 6 bowl movements a day to nothing in the past 36 hours. She is very uncomfortable, straining and screaming and I don't know if there is anything I can do to help her.

Start Breastfeeding her again?

Agree with Claire - formula can make babies constipated, you have the remedy in your breasts, go for it :)

Why does visiting friends and family make breastfeeding difficult, though? Breastfeeding's convenience comes into its own when you are away from home.

my lo was really constipated, fistly tried giving her cooled boiled water, about 1 oz 3/4 times a day. it worked for a while but she was still pooing pebbles. eventually we got lactulose from the doctor. i think you can buy it over the counter too. just give it to them from a syringe dropper and hey presto shes now having 4 soft poos a day. good luck

I have started exclusively breastfeeding again and expressing if we're going out. The reason I was finding it difficult whilst away is my DD is a very wriggly feeder and finds it quite difficult to latch on, especially if she's a bit excited so I don't always feel comfortable breastfeeding in public.

We went to the pharmacist who gave us a supository which worked really well and there was a massive explosion in her nappy. She hasn't moved her bowls since though and seems constipated again. I have put some cooled boiled water in a bottle for her so we'll give that a try too.

breastmilk is the best thing to shift it no need to give water, breastfed babies shouldn't have water.
