Stinging breast

For a few days, my left breast has stung after feeding. It seems to go on for hours, and it's not just in one place, but at several points across the breast. Tonight I've had to take paracetamol because it's so uncomfortable.

Is anyone able to shed some light on what it might be please. I should probably say that my breast doesn't feel hot. Warm, but not hot.

Could it be thrush? Does it itch or are your nipples pinker/redder?

Have you noticed any hard lumps or whitish spots on your nipples? that might point to a blocked duct or bleb.

It might be worth getting a GP appointment to get yourself checked over and get some medication if needed.

Might be worth googling (I'm no expert) but when I had thrush when bf dd1 it felt like a stabbing knitting needle through my breast during/after feeding. I believe mastitis is often accompanied by a flu-ey feeling, red lines across the breast and heat. Sorry I can't be more help!

My HV came to see us today, so I mentioned it all to her. She wondered if it might be thrush, but Dds mouth is totally clear and there's no signs of anything on my breasts. I've got no temp either, and boobs are warm but not hot at all.

So her only suggestion was that it could be my milk giving me pains after feeding Hmm Basically, we're none the wiser.

I'm due to see the gp on monday to get my section scar looked at, so I'll mention it then as well.

Lol at HVs suggestion!

How old is your LO? Could it be that the latch has slipped slightly and is causing you the pain?

McPhee · 20/07/2012 21:02

She's 3 weeks today.

The pains are across the breast after feeding. Whilst I'm feeding, apart from the ten second toe curl, I don't get any pains.

It seems to be a mystery Confused

I've taken to popping some paracetamol again today, plus a Diclofenic just to take the edge off of it.

When I had thrush, my ebf dd1 did not get it at all do had no thrush in her mouth. In addition, I had no temperature or external signs of thrush (?!) on my breasts. Maybe worth calling NCT Breastfeeding helpline or similar for advice? HV sounds like a bit of a muppet though Hmm

Sounds so like thrush that I am battling to get rid of. See someone ASAP or it could like me go from the nipple to the ducts which is so painful. You can get daktarin oral gel over the counter I believe but doc needs to give you the flucozole tabs too. Do not leave it. Check dcs mouth for white marks too Hope it gets better soon.

Thrush is not usually in one breast only and is rare at such an early age.

Have a read of the Breastfeeding Network's thrush info here and here.
