14month-old DD cold sore

AS per the title my DD appears to have developed a cold sore these past few days. Nothing huge, just looks like a bit of a cut at the side of her mouth (she has recently started giving "kisses" but none of us have a cold sore ourselves at the mo?)

She still breastfeeds and I think my nipples may also have been affected?? Mainly the return of toe-clenching pain when she latches on ... so what I am wondering is - will we be able to get over this and keep BFing? I went to the pharmacy today thinking I could just get some cream, but was advised that in such a little one that she needs to be seen by a Doctor, so will be calling them in the morning to try to get an appointment

Hi, I posted about a similar issue a couple of weeks back. My 12 month ds developed a cold sore and was worried I may end up with it on my nipples. I wasn't bothered about getting it, just whether it would interfere with my plan to carry on as long as poss. A few helpful people popped up but no one knew what i could do for sure. I did google it and I also spoke to my pharmacist who said that I could use cold sore cream on ds and advised that I try the cold sore plasters on him, so that it wouldn't come into direct contact with my breast. They have no drugs in them so literally just act as a barrier to prevent further spread. I am also a nurse so know all about infection control and took it upon myself to thoroughly wash my boob everytime he fed too. Not sure if Any of this actually helped but I didn't get it and the sore cleared up very quickly. Good luck! Grin

I went to the dr's and she said that no, DD does not have a cold sore- that has all cleared up now, but my nipples are still cracked and killing me! I bought Lanisoh cream for the first time and have been using that.

The GP said that if it actually was a cold sore DD had then it would actually be "horrific" and infected all her mouth/gums too.

So now my thoughts are "have we picked up bad BFing habits"- bad positioning resulting in cracked nipples?... Seems odd to be asking for BFing advise for my 14-month old haha
