DS won't feed from right breast

Ds is 2 wks and took to bf ing from day 1, though we always had a harder time getting his latch right on the right breast. I assumed it was because the right was bigger, harder to get hold of, but now I wonder...
For past couple of days he's decided to start refusing that side. He latches after 3 or 4 frustrating attempts, feeds for about 5mins, always looking concerned!, then takes himself off. He feeds for c. 40mins from the left.
I've tried a couple of other positions (rugby hold, lying flat etc) but no luck.
Can anyone explain? Any solution?

Congratulations on your newborn baby. I am no expert, and am sure someone much more knowledgable will answer too. Since I'm sat here feeding my 8 month DS who also did this, thought I would try and help!

Firstly I think this is quite common. Many friends had similar problems. I never really worked out why, it could have been that the letdown on that side was a little too forceful. I ended up buying a hand pump and either expressing a little and then trying to latch on. If that failed I could then express and empty that side to maintain supply. I popped the milk in the freezer and used it in bottles later on.

Eventually he just seemed to grow out of it. If I remember correctly, he steadily improved after a couple of weeks.

There are lots of sources of help out there, a breastfeeding councillor or la leche league for example. Is there a breastfeeding support clinic local to you which you could try? Good luck, I hope you can sort this out.

Get him checked out. He might have discomfort holding his body in that position.
