12.5wk old DD and feeding has just suddenly become VERY uncomfortable in last couple of days - perfect latch up to now but it's now like I'm getting a chinese burn on my nipple and is only just bearable. The worst pain is on the side of the nipple where her bottom jaw lies whilst feeding - no visible sores or anything, I think she's just pinching me?

She drools a lot and is constantly poking a finger or two in her mouth, apparently feeling her gums, could she be teething already? Is there anything I can do about this or just have to ride it out?

Possibly, have you checked it's not thrush?

Have a look in her mouth for any signs of a white coating. My DD and I got thrush around this age and it was PAINFUL to feed!!!!!!

Hope all's well xx

she's had thrush since birth, it was treated once and seemed to have gone, but came back again and the nystatin didnt seem to work that time - the doctor said that unless it was a problem, probably OK to just let her get over it in time. her mouth isn't as white as it was, but this morning it feels like there's a hit needle being periodically stabbed into my nipple, so I think it could be likely!

....damn. Confused

mystified at this - doctor didnt know what was up as there's nothing extenal to see and no deep boob pain, but said he'd treat as thrush until proven otherwise. definately no teeth coming yet...

today has been much more comfortable even though i havent applied any of the cream yet?

maybe her mouth just grew/changed shape or something? bloody painful anyway, almost made me chicken out of feeding her!

If this deep pain has been happening since birth it's much more likely to be latch rather than thrush - this from BFN has good info about thrush/nipple or breast pain as well as this.

Have you got access to a bfing counsellor/IBCLC? Local bfing group, baby cafe, bfing support at hospital?

BigBoPeep · 04/07/2012 22:09

no there's no deep pain and it's just been in the last few days - 12.5wks of pain-free feeding (apart from letdown).

It's all around the nipple - like a chinese burn! But nothing visible.

You haven't started applying teething gels have you? Or swapped nipple creams? It could be an allergic reaction/sensitivity to something that's on baby?

BigBoPeep · 05/07/2012 11:42

nope, haven't even used lansinoh for months! Confused its much much better today, almost back to normal....i wondered if i could be pregnant and that would cause random pain Confused going to do a test to rule it out later...

Is there anyone bfing-ish (bfc/IBCLC/infant feeding lead/infant feeding co-ordinator/bf peer supporter) who you could show your nipple to?

Good luck with the POAS!

BigBoPeep · 05/07/2012 19:40

haha, i'm sure i could dig out someone to show my nipple to but there is honestly no change/nothing to see!

if it's not the thrush, it might be worth going back to basics and being very exacting with latch - I know that a couple of times in the last 2 years DS has suddenly got lazy (or teething, or something) and I've had to watch his latch for a couple of days until he got back into a comfortable groove (so to speak)

BigBoPeep · 06/07/2012 20:36

Meh, test was negative (thank god) but the pinching is back!
