Weaning bf 6mo-too much milk?

Farleigh4 · 28/06/2012 14:31

My 6 mo son is very much bigger than average (well over 100th centile...cue disapproving HV!) he is long as well as 'bonnie' tho. Now starting to eat some food at every meal time, but am worried that he is having too much milk. Here is an average day. (Also he's still waking at night and can take 7 oz of water and still scream v easily-this is my second child, but we had a non sleeper last time and can't do it again, not sure how if the food/sleep situations relate, but maybe they do?)

7oz milk then breakfast hour or so later
4oz mid morning
7oz then lunch hour or so later
Random amount between 4 and 7 oz mid arvo (slept thro ysday) tea hour or so later
7oz milk at some point before bed.

Having a lapse in self confidence and all written/HV advice seems confusing or contradictory, but that could be the sleep deprivation!!

Any guidance/reassurance would be really gratefully received :-) x

Sorry, the first thing that struck me was that 7oz water seems like quite a lot of water for a baby this young?

I know,we just give him a little n try to put him down and this ends up repeating itself until we're all at our wits end and he's consumed a lot of water.cuddles just don't calm him and neither does a dummy. Just hoping that if we can sort the daytime amounts out then we can try and be a bit firmer about what happens at night. Any thoughts on the daytime milk?

I would give milk at night rather than a bottle of water. Once he is taking more solids I would then start to cut down the night feed gradually. What sort of food is he having?

Seona1973 · 28/06/2012 18:11

p.s. ds had a night feed until 8 months

As milk is supposed to be their main source of calories until they're one, I would give milk as well at night.

It might also be worth posting on the Sleep section as well?

I would give him milk at night for a while longer. Six months is young to sleep through without a feed.
