Week old bf baby feeds with breast milk pouring out of his nose during feeds!?

It never happened to me, I think you should ask your midwife

StarlightWithAsteroid · 23/06/2012 18:48

Midwife already thinks I'm nuts!

He's gaining weight well (lost none of his birth weight in the first days)

But the milk causes him to snort whilst feeding, although not enough to unlatch.

Hi, never experienced it with my first 3. But have just googled it and seems common enough. Sounds like you have a very strong let down reflex but it won't bother your baby. Also as they get bigger they become far more able to keep up with your flow.

Thank you flag!

What a waste. Have half a mind to collect it and feed it to him in a bottle on a night out Grin

I don't think it is normal. Milk coming down the nose is one of the signs of a cleft palate so I'd book an appointment with your GP and discuss it.

Thank you Bert. Ds had a paed check at 2 days. Woukd they not have picked up cleft palate there?

I've never experienced this either, it might be work checking out. Smile

out2lunch · 23/06/2012 19:19

sorry but i would have said cleft maybe too

RedKites · 23/06/2012 21:32

DS occasionally had a little come out of his nose during feeds when he was small, although doesn't sound as significant as what you are having. FWIW, I asked someone (either MW or HV can't remember) and she said it wasn't anything to be concerned about. I'd ask the MW, but wouldn't be too worried about it if everything else seems right.

Disclaimer - I am not saying your baby has this BUT it might be wise to get it checked out given the amount of milk you say is coming out of baby;s nose during feeding.

There is a rare type of cleft called a cleft uvula which can cause milk to come through the nose when bfing/drinking. It may have been missed as it's not terribly obvious so perhaps ask for a second check of baby's oral cavity just to be sure.
