reducing bottles

My ds is 13 weeks old and he seems to have reduced his bottles to only 4 bottles a day his last feed is at around 10 pm, he usually has around 24-28 oz a day. My worry is that at 3 and a half weeks he was 11 Ib 14, he hasn't been weighed since but reckon he's about 14.5 Ib now. I know roughly they're supposed to have 2 oz for every pound but some days he's fine on 24 oz, should I be worrying or not? he has plenty of wet nappies and poos about once a day so is satisified but is he having enough with 4 bottles ..he won't take anymore! I should also mention that he's started to chew his hands loads and watches us when we eat , does this mean he's self weaning? or is he teething?

I would say he may be teething, A few years ago they would say that he is ready for weaning but, they have moved the mark to 6m to avoid the risk of certain allergies developing.

I'm not quite sure how much milk per day he should be having, but if he seems fine and is thriving, he should be fine. But better to ask the HV for that, as I really don't remeber how much milk they should have a day but somewhat belive that DS was taking more bottles than that (although they may have smaller portions IYKWIM)

just realised he was 11Ib 14 at 5.5 week not 3.5 weeks.

Thanks chandra i know with my dd she was bf till 14 weeks but she only weighed 11.5 at 12 weeks so ds is alot bigger but then when she went onto bottles she was having 6 a day and ds was having 5 a day till a few days ago. the thing is he really wont take anymore so i'm a bit concerned.

He may be feeling a bit unwell, maybe he would get back to his 5 a day in the next few days, especially if he's teething. DS refused to eat or drink for three days just before his first tooth appeared.

yeah that may be it, he has had a constant cold since christmas but does seem to be getting better now. I'm also thinking he may be ready for fast teats as he's pulling on the teat and flattening it as well exactly like he did before I changed from slow to medium.

I don't think you need to really worry about the number of feeds per day, 24-28ozs sounds fine and it shouldn't really matter if it takes 4 bottles or 5 to get there.

At 13wks old my DD was having the same amount, but she did it in 7 feeds. At 18wks she dropped to 4 feeds a day but increased the number of ozs slightly, so we just go by how much she takes in 24hrs rather than how many bottles she's had.

My DD also chews her hands, I think it's a developmental stage rather than teething, does your DS show any of the other teething signs? Watching when you eat doesn't mean he is self-weaning, babies will watch you do anything and everything, it's how they learn about the world.

If you're worried about his weight, can you take him to get weighed at a drop in clinic? I'm sure he would let you know if he was hungry.

Cheers Nova just seen this, He's been great since we've swopped to fast teats yesterday and is now having 4 x 7 oz a day which i think is fine. I'm not worried about his weight he's already in 6-9 month clothes and he seems fine in himself since the teat swap and he sleeps through. Thanks for helping me put my mind at rest Smile
