Not latching on well

My one week-old Does not seem to be feeding effectively and I am feeling quite stressed.
He does not really gape as such and so comes on and off during feeds. He does not feed very long, fifteen mins say and during the day will be on and off every hour or so with one or two longer breaks. At night it is roughly everytwohours although tonight he has Gone for three, he is awake but not wanting to feed?
He does quite a bit of playing with nipple but also gets quite frustrated and it takes a good few minutes for him to get on, almost like he forgets he needs to suck.
He is jaundiced but has had blood test midwife keeping an eye on it.
Has a good five or so wet nappies and one poo a day.
Hemakeslots of peculiar gurgle noises, pulls faces etc And first night thougt colic but not sure now. Does cry a bitbutjot excessively.
Ds1 was so easy to feed I am not sure what I am doing wrong so any help gratefully received.

Has the baby been checked for tongue tie? NOt being able to open mouth wide and coming off the breast alot during feeds can be signs of that so might be worth getting him looked at.

Also, I'd check with you mw about the number of poos, by this stage you would expect at least 2 soft yellow poos as per this info. Fewer poos may indicate that he is not getting quite enough milk.

Are you seeing anyone today?

Try not to get stressed Ginga although I know that's easier said than done. DD had a slight tongue tie and we struggled with bf for ages, but it did eventually settle down. For the first three or four weeks I could only feed her in the rugby ball position. I'd also have to squish my boob a bit - I'd make a c-shape with my thumb and fingers and squish it a bit so that my nipple was wider than it was tall, compared to her mouth - really hope that makes sense as it's hard to describe.

Another thing you could do if you think he doesn't have enough nipple in his mouth is, when he is latched on, put your index finger on his chin, just below his lip, and pull his lip down a touch. I had to do this occasionally when DD was too imaptient to latch on properly.

You're not doing anything wrong - he's just learning how to do it. Good luck.
