No good after 6 months....

My baby has eczema (very long story so we'll leave that out) and finally seen a doctor who has referred him for allergy testing.
He is 7 months and I am convinced it was to do with what I was eating.

After being ignored for 3 months I finally seen a gp who listened however, he said to me that I should just stop breastfeeding as there were no benefits after 6 months!!!!
I know this not to be true as I fed my first little boy for 2 years and know all the great things it can do.

Would you report gp??? I think it's terrible that he may pass this load of rubbish onto someone else! And if I were to who would I report it to??

I would indeed. Not even going to go into what tosh that statement is! Speak to the practice manager and ask who the relevant person in the local PCT is to complain to. Make sure it's an 'official complaint' so it gets escalated.

I would absolutely report him, what utter tripe.

GPs are not required to have any breastfeeding training at all, perhaps you could suggest to the practice manager that the GP attends a training session or at least does a bit of reading up on the subject from a reliable source.

Good on you for wanting to improve things for other mums :)

Please do report this GP. You happen to be better educated than him but imagine there might be some poor mother out there who will take what he said as being gospel.

susitwoshoes · 12/06/2012 20:07

yes, report him. Utter twaddle. I think it would go to whatever the primary care trust that your surgery falls under - look on their website.

AnitaBlake · 12/06/2012 20:08

Yes. I had an issue with the GP at my six week check. I spoke to the breastfeeding co-ordinator for the PCT. Last time I saw him it was obvious he'd been brainwashed given the correct, up-to-date info ;)

Thanks guys!
I will report him then. Just wasn't sure how to go about it.

My DH is a GP and admits that before I had DC he didn't know much about bf, and he'd never had training about it.

However, after me bfing for a long time and starting many conversations with the words, "I was reading something interesting on MN..." he has learnt a lot and tries to impart his wisdom (and empathy) to his patients :)

OP, sorry your GP was ill-informed, not likely to be out of malice, just through ignorance.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 13/06/2012 16:37

Maybe in your complaint, you can ask whether he thinks baby should be on formula or cow's milk after 6mo. If he answers formula, then he should know it's a replacement of breastmilk. If he says cow's milk, then my guess is he's not well informed on baby's health issues.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 13/06/2012 16:37

And ofc should just refrain from giving such advice.
