Ebf but period has returned

My DD is now 12 weeks old but my period returned last week even though I am ebf her. Does this have any effect on my milk supply?

I'm concerned that I might stop producing milk and be forced to give up, can anyone give me some advice please?

I also ebf both my children my periods came back at about 3 months too. I had plenty of milk so don't worry! I've never heard of anything about it affecting milk supply...

Marking my place here, hope you don't mind.

I too am EBF but DS is only 6 weeks and AF arrived at the weekend Sad

I don't know what effect that has on milk supply - currently ok as DS is suckling away as I type, but longer term I have no idea Confused

When I had my DD my periods came back just about 8 weeks later.
All fine, no effect on milk supply at all.

DomesticDisaster · 11/06/2012 20:50

I should add, that I fed both mine for a year so can vouch for it not affecting milk in the long term too.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/06/2012 20:50

Mine came back at around 4 months with my first baby (and DS was still feeding lots at night - grr).

It didn't have any noticeable effect on my milk supply, although have read on here that some women have noticed that their baby is a little fussy around the time of their period.

It's definitely not a sign that you need to give up :)

Thank you for the quick replies and reassurance. Other mums at a breastfeeding support group were talking about it and no one's had returned and neither had mine at the time but due to the b/h I couldn't go back and ask lasr week.

Just out of interest what can/will effect supply?

Babylon1 DD is currently doing the same :).

I was another one. Slight effect on supply with DD2 but not enough of an effect to cause me to give up.

Grin

Glad to hear it shouldn't have an effect, I'm really enjoying it Grin

I am so pleased that I don't have to give up, after a tough start I want to keep going for as long as possible.

When I has my first ds ( a long time ago) I ebf and my periods returned one month after he was born. Had no effect on my supple. As I understand it bf should suppress ovulation but only if you feed at least every four hours. If for some reason you miss a feed e.g. baby sleeps through then it can trigger ovulation and your period. I may be wrong, feel free to correct me.Smile

HappyCamel · 11/06/2012 21:01

Has no effect at all and neither does pregnancy, right up to the point where you produce colostrum for a week or so before going back to milk.

whoopwhoopbib · 11/06/2012 21:05

heather1 DD has only ever fed twice at the most during the night so I guess this fits in with what you said, but during the day it tends to be much more frequently so at least she should still be keeping the supply going hopefully!

My period always returned at 3 months after all 3dc, I continued ebf until 7, 8, 13 months with no supply probs
heather1 that's interesting, mine were all biggish babies that slept well at night mostly with one or two feeds so that fits.
I was always a bit annoyed that I had af to deal with so early!
