4 week old feeding

Im a bit concerned about my 4 week old, she suffers from wind, which takes hours to bring up, but you can see its bothering her, as she grunts and brings her knees up with it. But I am mor concerened about the fact that she will take 4ozs every 4 hours during the day, but has started only taking 2 ozs during the very early feed and the mornign feed, she wakes up for it, but then falls to sleep during the feed, Ive tried everything but she sleeps through it, and is windy too. Is she too young to try getting her to go through the night ? as she is fine (apart from being windy) the rest of the time, or should I take her to see someone ?

any insight would be appreciated thanks

Does anything else make you think she's bothered by wind than just grunting and wriggling?

4oz sounds like plenty for a feed, but will she not feed anymore frequently? 4 hours is a very long gap, and it would be very unusual to sleep through the night at 4 weeks.

Is she putting on weight?

the hospital and health visitor said every 4 hrs and she should feed 1 oz for ever week she is, which is fine and shes fine with that, but its the through the night thing thats bothering me. As for the wind thing, she grunts, wriggles, is blue round the mouth, eyes rolling, all signs of wind. but only taking 2ozs for 2 feeds and sleeping, thats what is bothering me, I thought she was too young, I thought she needed to feed every 4 hrs until she was at least 6 weeks.

and yes she is putting weight on fine.

Being blue round the mouth is nothing to do with wind - that sounds quite serious (oxygen deprivation?) and I would seek immediate medical attention if it happens again.

I have never heard of "an oz for every week" - how bizarre! When she is 10 weeks will she have to drink 10 oz? I wonder if your HV is a bit "old school" - I thought 4 hourly feeds went out of fashion in the 70s Grin

Newborns have tiny, tiny stomachs, so 2oz sounds fine. 4oz is a big feed for a little baby. I would just feed her when she wants, however much she wants - don't worry about how much or how often.

I must say grunting and wriggling just sounds like what babies do to me, rather than an indication of any problem, so I probably wouldn't bother spending hours trying to wind her.

Do you mean a blue-ish tinge above the top lip? My mum also said that is a sign of wind. I think blue lips would be something to really worry about though.

I agree with Rubirosa, just feed on demand. If she is taking 4oz feeds in the day perhaps she isn't hungry enough for one at night and just needs a bit of a top up drink and that's why she only has 4oz. My baby is 7 weeks old and I am finding that although he wakes twice a night for feeds, he doesn't feed for as long as during the daytime. But he never goes four hours in the daytime, it's usually more like 3 hours.

If your daughter is putting on enough weight then don't worry about how much she has in the night. Presumably she is getting the right amount over a 24 hour period.
