Fluconazole dosage

My thrush is back in a bad way. :(

DS is 6 weeks. I first noticed thrush (white tongue in him, deep breast pain in me) at 10 days. Went to the doctor at 2 weeks, prescribed nystan for him and clotrimazole for me. Useless. Different doctor at 3 weeks, changed me to daktarin cream and after much persuasion prescribed fluconazole, 50mg once a day for seven days. This virtually cleared it up, but a couple of days after finishing the course (still using cream and drops) the pain was back.

Went back to doctor and changed DS to daktarin gel. Managed to persuade him to prescribe further course of fluconazole - this time it was 50mg twice a day for 7 days. I've only got 2 days left and it hasn't gone yet. I'm really concerned that I should have a longer course without any gap in treatment - scared that two unsuccessful courses will end up with me having super-resistant thrush and just having to bf through the pain indefinitely. :( I think BFN recommends a longer course but I only have net access on my mobile and can't view their leaflet as it's a pdf. :(

Any thoughts? I'm seeing doc the day I run out of meds anyway as it's my six-week checkup (incidentally a different doc and, though this shouldn't matter, a female one who has had children).

Sympathies I had thrush & it was horrid. It's recommended fluconazole is taken for 10 days at 50g twice daily by the BFN. GP's don't like prescribing it though.

It's so easy to reinfect yourself with thrush. I became obsessed with ensuring anything remotely milky (muslins, bedsheets, bra's) were boil washed or ironed. I changed my bath towel daily & used kitchen roll to dry my nipples & boobs. I air dried my nipples as much as possible, stopped using breast pads & threw away my nipple creams. I also took acidophilus probiotics which you can get for babies too & it went.

Hope it clears up soon Smile

deep sympathy - i went through exactly the same - my advice would be totally what suckedry has said - funnily enough i have just posted on a thread about allergies dunno if you can find it -i found the massive fluconazole doses i was given over 2 weeks made my skin really bad and i hate taking meds when breast feeding. the pain is unbearable, it makes me shudder when i recall the 11 weeks of agony i went through.=there is light at the end of the thrushy tunnel!!!

Thank you both so much. I'm doing all that suckeddry listed so hoping that if that plus treatment worked for you both it will work for me too. Will try to get doc to prescribe at least a further 3 days fluconazole then. I also really hate bfing and taking meds - feel quite upset that I've had to resort to paracetamol a few times but the pain is unbearable. Have cut out almost all sugar and have homeopath appt this weekend too. Hoping something works but also mentally preparing for possibility this might always hurt. It might sound a bit trite but I don't think I would have had the strength to keep at it, pre-DS. He's taught me so much, you know?
