Five week old feeding

Hi,

I've got a five week old DS who is ebf. Weight gain excellent, feeding well etc. my only concern is how much/often he wants/needs to feed. If he gets stressed his automatic response is that he's hungry and nothing else will calm him. He'll then feed for 2 mins and that will be that. Is that normal? Also he does a lot of cluster feeding - he tends to feed every 45 mins or so from 7am until about 10am and then yesterday he fed pretty much constantly from 4pm till he conked out at 10pm. Am just looking for reassurance really that this is what he should be doing!

Yep totally normal!!

Boobs give comfort not just food, hence him searching for you when stressed, this reconnects him with you and calms him.

Plus 6 weeks growth spurt means lots of feeds!! Go with it, he is helping build your supply, you are doing a great job.

Totally agree with llama just go with the flow and put your feet up Smile

Have you read What to expect in the early weeks and Cluster Feeding and Fussy Evenings.

With our DD we found that if I wore her in a sling she would sleep more. DH used to take her out in the pushchair in the evenings sometimes too as she would sleep for an hour and I could have an hours break from the feeding.

Have you also tried swaddlng?

I'll have a look At those links, thank you! I have tried swaddling but it seems to make him really angry at night! Though he will on occasion accept it in the daytime. Strange child... The really hot weather completely threw him off though, before that he'd been much more settled... He's slept much better the last 2 nights so am hoping things will settle down. I bought a sling in desperation and it makes him cry.... He is a fusspot!

Oh god the 6 week growth spurt she fed for 9 solid hour :(, DD2 is 8 week now and is having much larger gaps between feeds. i second the sling idea, i wouldn't be without mine.

teacher it could very well be the 6 week growth spurt but it does all sound normal and you sound like a great Mum.

Which sling did you get? We had a Close with DD but she wouldn't ever go in the newborn position, only upright? Have you gone to a slingmeet to try different ones? It might also be worth checking out local children's centres as one of ours will loan you different slings for free.
