Is this reflux? if no what is it?

DS2 is 3 weeks old, ffed and is generous in offering plenty wet and dirty nappies. Thing is, in the last few days, he seems to be in pain after feeding. He burps without a problem and then gets really upset and seems to be in pain. He also spits a bit out after feeding. I am not sure it is colic because we had a crying episode this morning although he seems to be more upset in the evening.
What do you think might cause the pain? Could it be reflux? Or the dreaded colic? Or worse, both?
Any advice gratefully received.

Colic is a bit of a mystery term applied to a set of symptoms that may just be newborn baby behaviour! It's absolutely normal for babies to spit up some milk after feeding (possetting), as long as it's only a small amount it's fine. It's also common for them to grunt, whinge, strain, fart and cry. They've got an immature digestive system, which can take some time to settle. It's also normal (if frustrating) for babies to be fussier in the evenings. They're all different though - is his behaviour very different from DS1?

What's NOT normal though, is very frequent vomiting (larger amounts), coughing after feeds, excessive crying and particular difficulty with lying on his back. You could try offering shorter, more frequent feeds. Feed him as upright as you can, give him a chance to burp (but without too much patting and jiggling) but don't worry if he doesn't, then keep him upright for 20-30 mins after feeds.

Trust your gut. If you really feel something is amiss, talk to your HV or GP as there are reflux & colic treatments available which some find very helpful, but generally what really helps is time and growth.

Congrats on your lovely new DS2, by the way :)

It could be silent reflux.

My dd had reflux - she arched her back whilst feeding and went on and off the bottle and SCREAMED. She also vomited like you wouldn't believe.

If you're worried speak to your GP / HV. My friends baby had silent reflux and her baby suffered much more than my projectile vomming baby! Her daughter needed a lot of meds, we tried gaviscon for dd but she got constipated so we just rode it out.

Congrats on your new addition.

He does not puke that much, it's just that he is in a lot of pain 10 mins or so after feeding. It does not last long but I really want to try everything I can to stop it. I just hate seeing him in pain without trying everything I can to help him.
Will try the GP tomorrow.
