Breastfeeding and calcium

I've been breastfeeding DD for 16 months now, and not planning on stopping any time soon.
I don't like dairy products, I never have and as a result of avoiding cheese milk etc and pregnancy/breastfeeding my teeth are very weak. I had to have a root canal and now my tooth is just crumbling away. I have a dentist apt this week, but I'm thinking in the mean time to start taking calcium supplements. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if they're ok to take when bf?

they should be okay - general new mum supplements have calcium in.

you don't really need supplements, though,as calcium can be found in all sorts of food, and if you have lots of citrus, that will help you absorb it into your food.

you could ask your dentist for advice, though, and prob take one of the general multi-vits :)

Hi - Yeah, they are fine to take whilst breastfeeding. I think magnesium helps with the absorption so you may be best off taking a combo of the two. Also, calcium isn't just found in dairy products so you don't need to take a supplement at all really - it is found in dark green veg, almonds, cashews, seeds, fish on the bone, tofu, chickpeas, fortified orange juice..so if you like any of these, maybe just up your intake. Hope the root canal goes ok :)
