So, last night we had some friends over and got talking about baby things as they are TTC. I was joking about having put breastmilk in my DH's tea that morning and said that although I didn't do this, we have both tasted it. Well, I may as well have said I was feeding my 16 week old pork pies and pasties for the reaction I got, they were genuinely disgusted! So it got me thinking, who else has tried it? Has the OH partaken? We were just both curious as to what it tasted like and didn't think it was that weird but I could be wrong! Grin

I've had a taste.

The first time I expressed I dared DH to have a mouthful. He said it would have been perfect with whisky.

It's sweet, and a lot "thinner" than cow's milk. I always wonder why, when people shudder at the idea of breastmilk, they will happily drink the same thing from a farm animal?

thegingerone · 27/04/2012 11:15

i've licked it off the back of my hand as dd is "topped up" with ebm and i check temp. tbh there are lots of things that would gross people out "from the other side" . I mean I pooped into the hand of a lovely 20 something year old mw during dd's birth. Oh wait. that grosses me out too! [MORTIFIED]

So a bit of bm tasting is nowt!

DefiniteMaybe · 27/04/2012 11:15

I've tried mine a few times. Once I tried it after eating stew and it tasted stewy lol. It's hard to describe sort of stew flavoured thin sweet milk. DP tried it with ds but won't try it this time round.
It is strange how people don't like the thought of human milk but cow milk is fine. Maybe calling it udder milk would make the difference.

booomchikkawowow · 27/04/2012 11:22

you decided to start a 'lighthearted thread' about breastfeeding? hahahahaha good luck Grin

i'm feeding my 8mo and me and DP have never tried it! Eurghhhh!

Hotpotpie · 27/04/2012 12:24

my OH keeps going to test the bottle with his tongue when he feeds our LO at 6.30, then gets totally grossed out when he remembers whats in it. Last night I asked him what he thought about sex given that we will eventually be thinking about such things once my stitches were out and I leak A LOT, strangely in that context he has no issues whatsoever......

Mombojombo · 27/04/2012 12:33

I regularly have a little nip! Mostly joking - I have excess lipase and my milk goes soapy very quickly so if I've expressed I have to try it to see if it tastes rank. I also sometimes finish up DS's cereal (made with BM) in a morning. I'm clearly some sort of LOONY who doesn't mind drinking milk of her own making/species instead of that of a 4 legged, slow moving, grazing, herd animal with 4 stomachs! Hehehe deliberately inflammatory bit inserted to get a reaction

Not saying I'd sit and have a refreshing cup of a morning though! DH refuses, is weirded out by it.

GEM33 · 27/04/2012 13:58

HA HA. This has made me smile, I secretly used my milk to make my partner is cuppa after he came home from work and as he got half way through he said, this is the worst cup of tea you have ever made me!!! I burst out laughing and he knew straight away what I had done, he finished it anyway.

Tell your grossed out friends that I made my partner suck a bit of milk straight from me on the first night home from hospital dd was born because i didnt believe I was producing enough and thought there were major problems, not realising that proper milk didnt come in for a few days!! He would never do it again and he is so off boobs since seeing me breast feed.

I ve tried it, but i wouldnt feel comfortable drinking it, but when you think about it, and the more i do think about, it is weird that we drink cows milk! why cows? who was the first person ever in the world to think, i know, i'll drink that cows milk!!

fhdl34 · 27/04/2012 14:14

I love the taste of my breastmilk but MIL looked like she was going to hurl when I told her that :)
DH has tasted a friend's BM (he gave her DS his bottle of ebm and licked it off his wrist without thinking) but won't taste mine Confused

AngelDog · 27/04/2012 14:26

I've tried it but DH couldn't think of anything worse.

EauRouge · 27/04/2012 14:26

I've tried it a few times. I know it's a common reaction but I don't see why people get squeamish about it Confused when most people consume the breastmilk of another species on a daily basis.

Breastmilk is meant to take on the flavour of whatever you've eaten but it's always tasted the same to me, just really sweet. Funny how some people say not to use sweet foods for starting solids in case your baby gets a sweet tooth...

scrumdiddlydoo · 27/04/2012 17:15

Just after I posted this, I put the telly on and saw people eating breastmilk icecream - apparently it tasted delicious! It is funny how people get weirded out by it but will happily drink the milk from a cow/goat etc. I think 'udder milk' is a brilliant idea!

Don't think DP would try it if you paid him! I make dd's porridge with breast milk, she wouldn't have any this morning so I ate it and it was lovely!

fapl · 29/04/2012 09:26

No, I have oversupply so my milk grosses me out because everything is covered in it and I hate the smell because it is everywhere (on me, my clothes, bedding etc) but funnily enough I don't mind the smell of baby sick, which is just regurgitated milk really, on my son. It is his smell when it is on him so I love it.

scrivette · 29/04/2012 12:14

I have tasted it quite a few times. It reminds me of the milk at the bottom of a surgery cereal bowl.

GodisaDJ · 29/04/2012 12:24

Haha this thread made me smile.

I've tried it.

DP has too. No big deal.

On a separate, but also funny not, my boobs leak when we have sex, especially when I climax Blush so there are normally lots of wet patches!! Hmm GrinGrin

auntietomum · 29/04/2012 17:51

I've tried it. Amazed how sweet it was - no wonder DS loves it.
