How do I know what size medela nipple shield I need?

They come in small, medium and large Confused Am currently a 36D at 32 weeks pregnant and want to be some just in case as they were a life saver with DD. I will try to feed without them as I know any type of shield is not ideal but they were the only way I could carry on with DD, so I'd like to have them in the house for my own peace of mind as much as anything. I have very flat nipples which I suspect was part of the problem last time.... Thanks in advance, sorry for the thick question!

It's not thick at all! I have flat nipples and a fortnight-old first baby, and only wish someone had recommended them earlier. My husband ran out and bought medium and large Medela shields (on the recommendation of a Mumsnetter) - I have large breasts, but find I use the medium size more, as I think our little one finds that size easier to cope with in his mouth. Large looks quite large to me. I have no idea whether there's some kind of actual size guide, and have long thrown away the packaging, sorry.

Thanks HardCheese, I'm glad you're finding them helpful. I tried the avent ones last time as well and I found the medela ones to be much softer and less intrusive, I just don't remember them being available in different sizes 2.5 years ago, although they probably were! I guess in the absence of a definitive answer I'll go for the medium and hope for the best! (The absolute best being that I won't need them at all, but time will tell...)

I found large better. Medium was too squashy!

CaptainNemo · 18/04/2012 12:11

Thanks SkiBum! Am sure I'll end up wasting money on at least one pair I don't need, am just trying to be organised...

I ended up buying 3 different sizes as I found it made the difference between being able to express or not. Complete waste of money but since you can't try them on, could not see another way. I am a size 34GG and am using the X-Large. So I think for you medium should work.

CaptainNemo · 18/04/2012 21:31

Thanks DeeBee, think I'd better go for the medium and hope for the best!

I don't think it has much to do with boob size. It's the size of your nipple that matters! I have large nipples but used the medium ones mostly. Can you messages your nipple diameter?! The large are 24mm I think, can't remember the other measurements.

mumtothreeeeeeeee · 18/04/2012 22:35

Ha ha! measure your nipple diameter!

CaptainNemo · 19/04/2012 10:56

Thanks mumtothreeee - I'll message my boobs now and ask them which size they think would suit them best, don't know why I didn't think of that before really Wink
