Dd2 is 9 days old and am bit concerned as she only feeds for about 10 mins at a time. Have tried taking clothes off, changing nappy etc. But she just refuses to take any more. She's a little premature as was born at 36 weeks, and lost more than 10% of body weight in that few days. She weighed 5lb 13 at birth and has now mainly regained as topped up with formula to get out of hospital.

Although she doesn't feed for that long, she is waking every 2 hours to be fed. Am still giving her a little formula, around 40 ml, once a night as am paranoid about getting readmitted to hospital. Do i need to worry? She was a bit jaundiced too and sleeps quite a bit but did wake for feeds

Sounds pretty good to me. Short frequent feeds are what newborns need. Their stomach is only the size of a walnut. I think nearly regaining birthweight at 9 days is good ( DS was back to birth weight of 5lb11 at 10 days). If gaining weight and has wet nappies you are probably on track. Remember your milk only comes in properly at about 3-4 days, and some of the weight loss is meconium, so in effect you've only been feeding for 5-6 days.

This is a good site, goes through how many wet dirty nappies to expect etc. If you can't tell if she is peeing (if you are using disposable) mw told us to put cotton wool ball into nappy so the pee doesn't disappear.

Some do feed very quickly, it varies a lot. Is that feeding from both sides, do you offer the first one again once she comes off the second? How are you, any pain when feeding?

We didn't have the weight issues but DS fed for 4 mins until a few months old. Once he worked out bf=comfort as well, he stays on for longer for night feeds but not actually feeding IYSWIM

Thanks bonzo, you're right , my milk only came in properly on day 5. She does have plenty of wet nappies and has been pooing lots over last couple of days.
She is only taking one side per feed, stranger, not interested in more tho i offer. Not hurting at all, am sure latch is fine.
Think maybe she is just very little still so can only take small amount.

Some babies only ever want one side per feed. My DS is 7 months now and has only ever fed on one side at a time, it definately didn't do any harm to his weight gain, he was about half a pound over his birthweight by 2 weeks and is a great big boy now!
