Had to swap overnight to the bottle and she won't drink more than 2oz at a time... Doesn't seem dehydrated... Am feeding every two to three hours or she gets v upset. Any tips for upping her intake? She is 5kg

Opheilia, I'm not getting why it would be wrong to feed her more often than you're and why it would be a good thing to space feeds out....surely your baby, experiencing this sudden change, needs to have her needs met without distress and enforced spacing out of feeds....am I missing something?

MigGril · 14/04/2012 09:06

If you baby is still quit young I'd be looking for another ped, as even bottle fed baby's arent supposed to have water in the first couple of months can be quit dangerous.

He really said that?

Hi All

Thanks for replying. She's 9 weeks and the pediatrician is clearly insane - I just needed someone to verify that! I'm not in the UK so sometimes it's difficult to get a culturally appropriate (for me!) opinion. Right now we are at 1oz every hour or 2oz every 2 hours and that's fine as when BF I basically offered her the boob every time she made a noise...

Am just worried as the formula packet says she should be having 6oz 5 times a day Shock

So the packet says 30oz a day and she is having 24oz? The 30oz is just an average guideline and as she has just swapped from BM to FM she may be adjusting (BF babies take an average of 25oz a day) to taking the FM. Give it some time and follow her.

Have a look at this on paced/baby led bottle feeding - that should hopefully give you some tips on how to bottle fed (I'm guessing no-one has told you how to bottle feed!).

5madthings · 14/04/2012 16:25

so she is having 24oz a day but in smaller amounts? sounds fine to me!

what truthsweet says that mount is just a guide! my dd NEVER had the amount that the packet said she should! she eventually settled on 4oz feeds and never took any more than that at once, she found her own pattern of how much she wanted and when.

she is now 16mths and has a bottle say 3 times a day? only very recently has she started taking 5oz, but thats generally in the morning, the other 2 tend to be 4oz and sometimes she doesnt want all of them.

she has always been a little and often baby with her milk, but she grew fine and was happy!

follow your babies cues, she will let you know when she is hungry and will take the amount she wants, just enjoy snuggling in with her when giving her the bottle it can still be nice and cosy like bfeeding snuggled right in, lots of eye contact etc.

enjoy your baby :)

Some days she is only taking 16oz... It's driving me to distraction and probably not helping the situation Sad
