Breast Feeding the Older Child

Are there any other mums on here who breast feed older children. My DS is 4 and he is still feeding for most meals. I am unsure if I should wean him off before he starts school - are there any mums who have been through this transition before? I would be grateful for any advice.

I'm sorry I can't help as I weaned DD when she was 3years as PG with DS who isn't that old. But hopefully some of the ladies who have fed olders one's will come along and give you some info.

Does he go to a nursery at all?

I don't see why you necessarily need to stop when he goes to school. My ds was younger, but went to full time nursery, and I just bf him mornings and evenings, and during the day at the weekend. It helped that he built up gradually to full time.

There are a couple of regular posters that are BF older children. We're not quite there yet, DD1 is 3.6 yo and I think she will start to wean soon.

I'm guessing you've already read this but if not then it's worth a look, there are lots of stories in there from experienced mothers.

Have you also tried your local LLL?

There was a thread about this ages ago, I'll see if I can find it for you.

Hi, am feeding my 4 yr old and initally thought we would wean before school, but it seems unecessary and he is changing so fast developmentally at the moment I feel I would be kicking a crutch from under him. Usually it is morning and night and sometimes he falls asleep when we are reading to him at night. My DP is planning to take him camping for a couple of nights to see how he is. This is mainly for my benifit as also feeding 21mnth old and really would like not to be still tandem feeding, but after reading and talking at my local LLL I realise his personality is not suited to me limiting something, the more I push away the more he would cling and it is only a short time really. Gets on my blooming nerves sometimes though

I found that ds1 needed it more than ever when he started school.
